Nanhi Kali for the girl child
Project Nanhi Kali is a national girl child sponsorship program that brings individuals and corporations to annually sponsor and provide 10 years of quality education to the underprivileged girl child in India. Nanhi Kali provides the girl child not only academic support (before and after school study classes) to reach grade specific learning competency levels, but uniforms, clothes, shoes, socks, note books etc to enable her to go to school with dignity.
Nanhi Kali partners with 21 NGOs to implement the project and currently supports the education of over 70,000 underprivileged girl children in remote rural and tribal areas and poor urban areas in Andhra Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Delhi, Tamil Nadu, Haryana, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan.
Nanhi Kali sponsorships have seen an increase in girls’ attendance in school, a fall in dropout rates, and improvements in learning outcomes within a year's time. The goal of Project Nanhi Kali is to reach 5,00,000 girls by end 2014.
To become a guardian of a Nanhi Kali, you need to spend only Rs. 2400 (for girls studying in Std 1- 5) and Rs.3600 (for girls studying in Std 6 -10) per girl child, per annum. Nanhi Kali guardians receive a profile of the girl along with her photograph followed by regular Progress Reports, so that they can track her academic progress.
