Pratham

Pratham is India's largest non-governmental organization working to provide quality education to underprivileged children. Established in 1994, in Mumbai, as a tripartite collaboration between the government, the corporate sector, and citizens, Pratham has taken its mission of 'every child in school and learning well' to over 35 cities and 21 states. In 2008-2009, Pratham reached 33 million children through its Read India campaign and 500,000 children through other focused interventions.

In Mumbai, Pratham reaches about 90,000 children in schools and slum communities; teaching them to read, write, do basic math and speak English; and helping them prepare for the State Government Class IV scholarship exam. In 2010, there were 96 scholarship awardees in Mumbai from Pratham classes (8,491 children appeared and 3449 (41%) passed). Our Library Programme introduces children to a range of interesting books and reaches out to about 77,000 children in Mumbai itself. Pratham is also instrumental in rescuing and repatriating children from the factories of Dharavi and other parts of Mumbai, which are now largely child labour free. So far, over 45,000 children have been repatriated.

More recently, Pratham has changed the national dialogue around the quality of primary education through its flagship program Read India and the Annual Status of Education Report (ASER), focused on rural India. ASER is facilitated by Pratham to measure learning levels across rural India, the largest and the first of its kind. Read India is an innovative campaign to improve the reading and math skills of children through accelerated learning techniques, implemented through thousands of volunteers and government partnerships.

Awards and Recognition:

Pratham recently received the 2011 Skoll Award for Social Entrepreneurship. In 2010 it received the India Business Leader Awards and the EMPI Indian Express Indian Innovation Award. In 2009 Pratham was awarded with the CNN IBN Indian of the Year Award in the Public Service category and was designated as a ‘must buy’ by the Abdul Jameel Poverty Action Lab, MIT. Pratham is also the recipient of the Henry Kravis Award for Leadership for 2010.
