A Clean Sweep in Zimbabwe

By Mumbai Indians

The 2nd ODI between India and Zimbabwe sealed the fate of the series where India took an inaccessible lead of 2-0. In an attempt to make it 3 – 0 Team India met Zimababwe once again at the Harare Sports Club for the third and final ODI of the series. Zimbabwe made 5 changes to their team coming into the final game, while India on the other hand had just one change, Karun Nair was replaced by debutant Faiz Fazal. Zimbabwe skipper, Graeme Cremer won the toss and decided to bat first.

Just like the last two matches, Dhawal Kulkarni and Barinder Sran started the innings with the new ball and bowled well in sync. Zimbabwe had a steady start, losing only one wicket in the first 20 overs but the introduction of Bumrah saw the hosts suffer a huge blow. The Zimbabweans suddenly found themselves in a slump as they lost 4 wickets in 4 consecutive deliveries. Wickets kept tumbling for Zimbabwe as Jasprit Bumrah hit the deck hard and got the ball to bounce and swing. The speedster ended up bagging 4 wickets conceding just 22 runs in his 10 overs. The Indian spinners, Axar Patel and Yuzvendra Chahal, chipped in with wickets too taking 1 and 2 respectively. A disciplined and destructive bowling performance by the Indian team caused the Zimbabweans to fold for a mere 123 in 42.2 overs. This was the 3rd consecutive time that the hosts failed to play out their 50 overs.

After a magnificent performance by our bowlers, the two openers KL Rahul and Faiz Fazal came to the crease to bat. Having to chase the lowest target in the series, on perhaps the most batting friendly wicket, the new Indian opening pair started fairly cautiously till the innings break. Once the innings resumed, the batsmen started to play the bowlers with ease. Faiz Fazal the debutant ended up scoring a half century 55* (61) on his debut and K.L Rahul on the other side who is in the form of his life also scored a half century 63* (70) to go along with the century in the first match. The duo ended the match with a boundary finishing the match in 21.5 overs and thus winning the series 3 – 0. K.L Rahul was also awarded the Man of the series for his 196 runs in the series.

A cakewalk chase, courtesy the bowling efforts of Jasprit Bumrah and the bowling unit, helped the Men in Blue pitch in another clinical performance to win the 3-match series.
