In a must win encounter, Delhi Daredevils faced the Sunrisers Hyderabad at the former's new home ground in Raipur. A win over here for SRH meant absolute certainty that they will be in the first position while a win for Delhi meant they didn't have to depend on the results of other teams for a playoff spot. DD won the toss chose to bowl first.
Sunrisers Hyderabad had a pretty decent start with the usual pair of David Warner and Shikhar Dhawan facing the new ball. SRH were doing fine until the last ball of power play when Carlos Barthwaite stunned Dhawan with a superb effort on the field to effect a run out. SRH lost two more quick wickets to bring Moises Henriques to the crease. The two started building a foundation for a big total and Warner got to his fifty. But a spirited DD broke another important partnership to come back into the game. SRH's lower middle order got some vital runs to set a respectable target of 159/7. Brathwaite was the pick of the bowlers as he troubled the batsmen with his steep bounce and picked up 2 wickets.
When Sunrisers came to bowl they got the important wicket of Quinton De Kock in the second over. The SRH bowlers bowled well to restrict DD to 37/1 in the power play. Karun Nair and Rishabh Pant did well to stabilize the innings and put on a partnership 73 runs. The two youngsters showed a lot of character until Pant was caught short of crease with a stunning direct hit from Bhuvneshwar Kumar from the deep. SRH could have capitalised from there on but two dropped catches gave Delhi the chance to getaway. Mustafizur Rahman and Kumar brought the match down to the wire. With 6 required of 2 balls, the youngster Karun Nair maintained his composure and hit two consecutive boundaries to win the game for DD. Nair played an anchoring innings of 83 to guide his team home by beating SRH by 6 wickets and still remain in hunt for the playoff spot.
