India aim to draw level in Adelaide

By Mumbai Indians

Australia produced a brilliant all-round effort to give India a reality check in Sydney. Now with the action moving to Adelaide, the hosts will have a shot at sealing the series with India being pushed to perform.

Before these sides lock horns for the second time in 2019, we take a closer look at what the team combinations could be like.

From the Indian dressing room:

Balance is the biggest worry point for India. In Sydney, the visitors decided to play four bowlers and one all-rounder forcing Kohli to go to Ambati Rayudu as his fifth option.

Kedar Jadhav could be back in the reckoning considering the value he adds as a part-time spinner. Dinesh Karthik may have to sit out for India to accommodate Jadhav.

India has looked vulnerable whenever their top-order has failed. Shikhar Dhawan, coming after a long break, will have to get some runs under his belt with Shubhman Gill breathing down his neck. Gill will join as a reserve opener when India tour New Zealand later this month so there will be plenty of pressure on the left-hander.

India will want Rohit Sharma to continue in the same vein. The prolific right-hander now has the most hundreds against Australia in Australia. Skipper Virat Kohli’s rare failure shouldn’t bother the team. Knowing the way he plays, Kohli will be eager to perform considering his team is under pressure.

Ambati Rayudu at four and MS Dhoni at five are very crucial to India’s cause at the Adelaide Oval. Dhoni got a half-century in the previous game but his scoring-rate was criticised. However, one can trust him to change gears knowing the experience he has.

India’s bowlers did a fine job to curtail the opposition. Jadeja and Kuldeep should lead the spin attack while Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Mohammad Shami form a potent force with the ball.

Khaleel Ahmed had a disappointing outing but is expected to feature in the second ODI.

From the Australian dressing room:

Vice-captain Alex Carey has said that Mitchell Marsh will be available for selection in the next ODI but given his side’s performance, there might not be a change.

A lot will be expected from Carey’s opening partner and skipper Aaron Finch. Finch has been a successful player against the white ball but early swing has undone him on occasions.

Australia’s middle order comprising of Usman Khawaja, Shaun Marsh and Peter Handscomb were all among the runs with a half-century each. The way Stoinis played was commendable and the only change that could potentially happen is with Glenn Maxwell’s batting position.

He got 11* off 5 balls batting at number seven but Australia would want to see him bat higher and create an impact.

Australia has a long tail in Nathon Lyon, Peter Siddle, Jhye Richardson and Jason Behrendorff. Just to give their batting order a cushion, Nathan Coulter-Nile could be a nice all-round option for Finch in place of Siddle.

Jhye Richardson and Jason Behrendorff made sure that the Kangaroos don’t miss the likes of Starc and Cummins in the series opener and the same will be expected of them when they join forces in the second fixture.

The match will begin at 8.50 AM IST.
