India aim to make it 2-0

By Mumbai Indians

India have named an unchanged twelve for the second Test at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad starting on Friday.

Windies will aim to save the series and will feel confident with the return of skipper Jason Holder and their experienced pacer Kemar Roach.

Before both the teams meet before the beginning of the limited-overs leg, we take a look at what’s on offer.

From the Indian dressing room:

India, after this Test, will directly be donning the whites straight in Adelaide in December against Australia. Prithvi Shaw came good in his opening Test and will want to end any possible chances of the Indian selectors recalling Vijay or Dhawan with another solid performance in Hyderabad.

KL Rahul didn’t score in Rajkot but he will want to get his form back before flying to Australia. Cheteshwar Pujara and Virat Kohli have been among runs but Ajinkya Rahane will feel the heat.

The Indian vice-captain has averaged only 26.07 in 8 Tests across 14 innings this year. Rahane got a start in Rajkot but couldn’t convert. Rishabh Pant has consolidated his place behind the stumps and more importantly, has been able to contribute with the bat as well – adding to India’s advantage.

Ravindra Jadeja’s ton in Rajkot will bolster his chances of being that all-rounder when India travel to Australia with Hardik Pandya still being injured.

Ravichandran Ashwin has time and again shown us that he is the boss on Indian tracks and continues to grow while playing in India but the country’s premier off-spinner will want a strong performance under his radar ahead of the Adelaide Test.

Kohli displayed immense confidence in Kuldeep Yadav who bagged his maiden Test five-for to repay the skipper’s faith. So India’s spin triplet seems in fine rhythm.

The hosts will have a choice to make with Shardul Thakur being named as the 12th player. Umesh Yadav and Mohammed Shami, however, remain favourites to play.

From the Windies dressing room:

Windies will feel a little relieved with skipper Jason Holder and Kemar Roach returning to their side. The bowling couldn’t really challenge India’s might in Rajkot as they went on to concede a whopping 649 runs, eventually losing by an innings and 272 runs.

As far as their batting is concerned, Windies are most likely to play the same set of batsmen who took guard in Rajkot. They will wish for a better show from Kraigg Braithwaite who will be set free from his captaincy duties with Holder returning. Kieran Powell played with utmost confidence once he got set in the second innings at Rajkot. Windies will be hoping for their other batsmen to take a leaf out of his book and apply themselves on a similarish Hyderabad track.

Shai Hope has got just 60 runs in his last two Tests. He will be under immense pressure to get a big score. Sunil Ambris, who scored runs in the warm-up game was criticised for the way he got out in Rajkot. He has been among runs but hasn’t been able to replicate that at the highest level.

The left-handed Shimron Hetmyer and Roston Chase have tremendous potential in them but haven’t able to play spin well in Indian conditions. Shane Dowrich is a solid keeper-batsman and will feel confident with Jason Holder back in the side.

Holder can score valuable runs and more importantly bat with the tail. Windies also have an option to field Jomel Warrican in place of Devendra Bishoo who took quite a beating despite claiming wickets in Rajkot.

Jomel Warrican could be more economical with his slow left-arm spin, which, at this point, will be a trait that the Windies would want. Shannon Gabriel consistently clocked good speeds. He will be hoping for an improved show especially with good talent waiting for an opportunity on the bench. Holder’s troops will heavily rely on Kemar Roach to give them early breakthroughs.

Overall, Windies will aim to come back strongly while India will be aiming for nothing less than a win when they take the field in Hyderabad on October 12.
