Australia won by 4 runs (DLS Method, 17-over game due to rain, Target 174)

India crashed to a last-over defeat in the first T20I at Brisbane thanks to a very special final over from Marcus Stoinis to help Australia go 1-0 up in the three-match series on Wednesday.

Chasing a revised target of 174 in 17 overs, India were rocked early when Jason Behrendorff had Rohit Sharma dismissed cheaply. Shikhar Dhawan brought his good form to Australia and kept playing his shots, targeting the likes of Behrendorff and Andrew Tye.

India sent KL Rahul ahead of skipper Virat Kohli but the move didn’t work well. Rahul hit a lovely square cut to Adam Zampa but was stumped off him for 13.

Virat Kohli, at number four, struggled during his stay and could not accelerate. He tried to break the shackles but Zampa got the better of him with India reeling at 94/3 in the 11th over.

Shikhar Dhawan and Rishabh Pant then resurrected the innings and took the attack to Australia. Dhawan, especially, played some lovely shots and managed to clear the fence twice with ease.

A Billy Stanlake bouncer saw him ramp the ball straight to Behrendorff to put Australia on top again. India needed 69 runs from 38-balls when Dinesh Karthik and Pant joined forces.

Karthik, in particular, played his shots right from the word go to bring India back in the game. India needed 60 from the final four overs when Karthik and Pant both belted 25 runs to turn the game around.

The men in blue needed 18 off 10 balls when Pant played an uncharacteristic shot to bring Australia back in the game. Krunal Pandya, the new man, found it difficult to get going in the last over where Stoinis offered no pace.

India lost him and Dinesh Karthik on successive balls and eventually fell short by 4 runs. Earlier in the day, Australia were put in to bat first by Kohli.

D’Arcy Short (7) was dismissed early by Khaleel Ahmed who then took a beating from Lynn. The local boy smashed him for three sixes and was looking good for more when he lost Aaron Finch (27) on the other end to Kuldeep Yadav.

His 37-run stay also came to an end when he misread a Kuldeep Yadav googly and gave him a simple return catch. Glenn Maxwell and Marcus Stoinis remained undeterred, bringing out their fireworks, targetting the likes of Krunal Pandya who ended up conceding 55 runs from his four overs.

Rain forced an interruption and the game was reduced to 17 overs when Bumrah got rid of Maxwell. Australia ended up scoring 158/4 from their quota.

The second match will be played at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on November 23.
