India defeated Windies by 5 wickets on an Eden Gardens track which had plenty on offer for the bowlers on Sunday.

The hosts handed Krunal Pandya and Khaleel Ahmed with their first T20I caps. Rohit won the toss and invited the Windies to bat first citing dew playing a part later in the innings.

Windies, without their regular openers, sent Shai Hope and Denesh Ramdin to open the innings. Hope was looking confident, playing his shots while Ramdin looked a little tentative and lost his wicket to Umesh Yadav.

Shimron Hetmyer, batting at number three, wasn’t afraid to play his shots but things took a bizzare turn when both the Windies batsmen found themselves at the same end with Manish Pandey removing to bails to dismiss Hope.

Kieron Pollard, batting at number four, had a tough time at the crease. He was troubled early by Khaleel but displayed some confidence when he hit Krunal for a six. But Krunal got his revenge when he had Pollard holing out to the long on fielder to open his account in T20Is.

After conceding 10 runs from his first over, Krunal made a remarkable return to curb the run-flow. He conceded only 5 runs in his next three overs forcing the likes of Darren Bravo and Rovman Powell to take that extra risk against Kuldeep who ended up removing them.

Windies were reduced to 63/7 when Carlos Brathwaite misjudged the length of a Kuldeep Yadav delivery with India dominating proceedings. Debutant Fabian Allen took things in his own hands and tried to take the Windies to a respectable total.

He hit four boundaries during his 20-ball stay scoring 27 but Khaleel Ahmed dismissed him to trouble the Windies further. The visitors went past the 100-run mark thanks to Keemo Paul’s 15-run cameo and ended up setting a 110-run target.

Oshane Thomas rocked India early with his raw pace – dismissing Rohit Sharma with a peach that had his faint inside edge and cleaning up Dhawan for the third time in this series.

KL Rahul and Rishabh Pant, after dodging Keemo Paul and Oshane Thomas’ hostile bowling, faced trouble in seeing off Carlos Brathwaite who removed both of them.

Pant, especially, failed to read the situation of the game and threw his wicket away. Manish Pandey and Dinesh Karthik then joined forces to sensibly bat and bail India out of trouble.

Debutant Khary Pierre dismissed Manish Pandey which saw Krunal Pandya come to the crease.
Pandya was quick to rotate the strike and accelerated as and when the opportunity came. He played a reverse sweep and a late cut to get two boundaries.

His third boundary came in front of square when he pierced the gap between midwicket and square leg. A chip on the next immediate ball saw him hit the winning runs with Karthik being unbeaten on 31* at the other end. India won with 13 balls to spare.

The second T20I will be played at Lucknow on November 6.
