Jerome Taylor retires from Test cricket

By Mumbai Indians

The West Indian pacer Jerome Taylor announced his retirement from Test cricket, according to WICB. Taylor,32, played his last Test in Sydney at the start of the year. With 130 wickets to his name in 46 Tests over a span of 13 years, Taylor was a nightmare for the batsmen with his natural outswinger and rapid pace.

After giving a “formal notification” of his decision to retire from the longer format, he was left out of the West Indies squad which will take on India later this month. Taylor made his international Test debut at the age of 18 against Sri Lanka on June 20, 2003 having impressed in domestic cricket for Jamaica. Injuries however, played a spoil-sport in his career as he was not able to reach his full potential having spent almost five years out of the Test side between 2009 and 2014.

He was at his peak in 2009,when he took 5/11 vs England in an innings on his home ground in Jamaica. England were dismissed for just 51 and West Indies went on register an innings victory. Sabina Park, Kingston, Jamaica also hosted Australia in 2015 and India in 2006 and on both the occasions Taylor was on fire. His best bowling figures in an innings of 6/47 came against Australia in the 2015 Test match, while his best bowling figures in a match of 9/95 came against India in the 2006 Test match. In 2008, he was hailed as the leading wicket-taker for the West Indies in the Test series against the Lankans. Apart from his fiery bowling, Taylor was also a handy lower order batsman and his most famous moment with the bat came against the Kiwis when he surprised everyone with a Test century while batting at No. 10.

Taylor, emerged from injury problems with good effect in 2014, and went on to play 17 more Tests. He took six wickets against England in Barbados last year to help West Indies win the match and secure a 1-1 draw. That was his last involvement in a Test victory.

Taylor who was part of the 2015 T20WC winning West Indies squad has decided to focus on limited-overs cricket. He will be available for ODI & T20I selection. We wish our pacer all the luck for his career in the shorter formats of the game.
