Rohit's Real Test

By Mumbai Indians

Starting from a modest background in Borivali, winning the World T20 title in his first year and now to being considered one of the best batsmen in world cricket, Rohit Sharma has surely scaled as a batsman.

Rohit displayed a lot of character and impressed the cricketing community when he became the only batsman to score two double centuries in ODI cricket. He also has been an excellent captain for Mumbai Indians (MI), leading us to two titles in 2013 and 2015. In the recent IPL 2016, Rohit was also amongst the runs as he went on to score 489 runs at an impressive strike rate of 132.

Test cricket is one of the toughest formats of the sport, every cricketer strives to excel in it. With Team India touring West Indies for four test matches in the next two months, it is going to be a crucial phase in Rohit’s cricketing career. He made his debut is Test cricket against West Indies in 2013 and has now played 16 Test matches with an average of 33.18. He has also scored four half centuries and two centuries in his relatively short Test career. The stakes are high for Rohit with 17 tests lined up for Team India this year.

During these 9 years, Rohit’s batting position has gone through a lot of shuffling. In ODI, he excelled as an opener, but it is Test cricket where he would want to prove himself. However the right hander seems to have kept a positive approach towards the upcoming series, this is what he had to say before departing for the West Indies tour “I am not taking too much pressure of cementing my Test place. I have decided to get a smile on the face and look ahead. I can’t change my past. I want to stay in the present.”

The ODI opener however keeps an open approach when it comes to his batting position in Tests. “I try to keep things simple and leave it up to the captain and the coach. But if I have to choose, I prefer middle order in Tests; which is 4-5-6. But if the team wants me to bat at 3, I have to be able to do that”. With the 1st test starting on 21st July it will be interesting to see which batting position Rohit Sharma plays at. <>/p
