RPS vs KXIP – Match Report

By Mumbai Indians

Rising Pune Supergiants faced the Kings XI Punjab in a dead rubber at Visakhapatnam. A win over here would ensure that they won’t finish at the bottom of the table. It was Murali Vijay who won the toss and chose to bat first.

Kings XI Punjab started well as they got to their fifty in the power play. Hashim Amla was the first one to go when he tried to hit the ball over mid-wicket but instead chipped it straight to the fielder. Wriddhiman Saha followed Amla to the dressing room when he was caught at first slip by R Ashwin off Adam Zampa. It was Murali Vijay and Gurkeerat Singh who took the innings forward with a partnership of 58. Captain Vijay reached his 5th fifty but got out trying to slog Ashwin. Gurkeerat hit a whirlwind fifty to push KXIP’s score. Ashwin got two more wickets to end his spell with the figures of 4-34. KXIP ended their innings with a total of 172 runs.

RPS started well as they got off to a positive start. Things were looking good until Ajinkya Rahane nicked a ball going down the leg to the keeper. George Bailey followed Rahane to the dressing room when he was foxed by Axar Patel, only to be stumped by Saha. Saurabh Tiwary and the opener Usman Khawaja were looking good in the middle before Gurkeerat Singh dismissed both the set batsmen in the same over. With two new batsmen on the crease the chase seemed a bit far-fetched. Thisara Perera hit a few big hits to keep RPS in the hunt. Captain MS Dhoni supported him well by hitting a few mighty hits himself. With 23 runs required off the last over, the task looked a bit difficult even for MS Dhoni. It was Axar Patel who bowled the last over and was bludgeoned by MSD. With 12 runs required off the last two deliveries, Dhoni sent both of them flying into the stands to finish their IPL campaign on a good note.
