Series on the line in Headingley

By Mumbai Indians

5 matches down. 3 T20Is. 2 ODIs. And this tour of England has been a series of comprehensive victories. India and England have won a match each with the series decider to be played in Headingley on Tuesday.

England will be high on confidence after a colossal 86-run victory at Lord’s while India will aim to get their mojo back and pocket the ODI series with a clinical performance at Leeds.

The hosts enjoy a good record at Leeds. They have won 19 out of the 30 times they’ve played at this venue. If the conditions continue to remain overcast, one can expect the seamers to play a larger role with two new balls at both ends.

From the Indian dressing room:

India’s middle order got exposed at Lord’s. All looks good when India’s top order clicks but if the middle order can still cope up with the pressure of chasing tall targets is yet to be seen. Shikhar Dhawan has got off to two quick starts before throwing his wicket away so team India head coach Ravi Shastri will be hoping for him to carry on and anchor India’s innings.

Rohit Sharma was made to struggle at London before he decided to break free with a big shot but found no connection only to be castled. Considering the rich vein of form that he is in, India will be banking on him to do the bulk of the scoring. Virat Kohli has looked good in both ODIs but a hundred is long due. He will be itching to convert his start into a big one in the decider.

Suresh Raina got runs in both games but the rate at which he scored in Lord’s will bother the team management. MS Dhoni, the latest entrant in the 10000 run club, got the support of his skipper after a slow knock in a big chase.

Hardik Pandya had a bad day with the ball and couldn’t add much with the bat too. England decoded India’s spin twins — Yuzvendra Chahal and Kuldeep Yadav but they will return to lead the attack in the final.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar was seen bowling before the 2nd ODI and his return, possibly in place of Siddharth Kaul, will boost the team’s morale.

Overall, a lot will depend on how India’s wrist spinners performance in Headingley.

From the English dressing room:

England have called up James Vince after releasing Dawid Malan and Sam Curran to play for the England Lions. Vince has been in scintillating form in the domestic circuit but Eoin Morgan would not want to tinker with his winning combination.

Jason Roy and Jonny Bairstow have been lethal at the top with Joe Root returning to form, helping the home team’s cause. England’s batting, on the whole, looks solid too. Despite giving Kuldeep three wickets, the hosts could manage to pile 322 runs on the board.

Their middle order looks steady with Eoin Morgan, Jos Buttler and Ben Stokes all having the capability to turn games on their given day. What worked in favour of England was the cameo of David Willey at number 8.

Willey’s capability to score runs at a quick rate down the order adds value to this English outfit. Liam Plunkett also stood tall removing 4 crucial Indian wickets.

Moeen Ali and Adil Rashid played a big part in curtailing the run flow during the middle overs. Morgan will be hoping for a repeat from his tweakers in the third and final one-dayer to stop India from scoring.

England and India will face off at Headingley on July 17 at 5 PM IST.
