From Ro-HIT to 'Hitman'

By Mumbai Indians

Bangalore - November 2, 2013. A day which changed many equations in the life of Rohit Gurunath Sharma. A humid afternoon at the Chinnaswamy, Rohit Sharma spared no Australian bowler who came his way.

With an elegant 209, Rohit Sharma smashed the first of his three ODI double hundreds and hence, earned a very special nickname which has become his identity over the course of his playing days.

In an interview with Star Sports, Rohit Sharma reveals how the term ‘Hitman’ was coined and much more. Here’s the entire transcript.

Q: What is Rohit Sharma's favourite food?

Rohit: At home, I like a home-cooked meal only. When we are touring, we die for home-cooked meals, we never get it while touring. When I am at home, I genuinely like to eat home-cooked food. If I am travelling, I like Japanese.

Q: Favourite football player?

Rohit: Zinedine Zidane

Q: Does Rohit speak Telugu?

Rohit: I can understand a little bit. Not so much, but a fair bit. I can understand and speak a little bit as well.

Q: Best friend?

Rohit: Actually, there are quite a few of them. I cannot name one, because if I take one name, the others will get upset. That's only because I have lots, they all have been very helpful throughout my career, throughout my life. In some capacity, they've always been with me, I can't name one.

Q: How did the name Hitman come along?

Rohit It's probably because my name is Rohit so 'hit'. And of course, I am a guy so Hit-man. A guy from the production house of Star named PD, way back in 2013 used this for the first time. After I got my first double hundred, I came for an interview - he told me 'Boss, you're the Hitman of the Indian Cricket Team. I said 'Okay, thanks'. That was the first time I'd ever heard the word 'Hitman'. Then it was picked up by a few commentators and it was spoken on air and that's how it started to grow.
