Bhuvneshwar, Jadeja star as India clinch T20I series against England at Edgbaston
Ravindra Jadeja’s fighting knock followed by an all-round bowling performance helped India defeat England by 49 runs in the second T20I at Edgbaston in Birmingham and take an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series.
Defending a target of 171, India rode on Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s three-wicket haul while pacer Jasprit Bumrah and leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal bagged two wickets each to bowl out England for 121 in 17 overs.
Bhuvneshwar continued his impressive form as he removed England opener Jason Roy for a golden duck in the run-chase and later dismissed England’s new white-ball captain Jos Buttler (4) in his second over.
Meanwhile, Bumrah piled more pressure on the England batting line-up as he cleaned up Liam Livingstone (15) with an incredible in-swing delivery.
England middle-order batter Harry Brook (8) and all-rounder Sam Curran (2) were also quickly back in the hut with the hosts struggling at 60/6 in 10.2 overs.
While all-rounder Moeen Ali smashed 35 runs off just 21 balls to resurrect the England innings, he perished to Hardik Pandya.
The England tailenders failed to show any resistance as India bundled out England for 121 to clinch their fourth consecutive T20I series against them.
Earlier, Ravindra Jadeja’s unbeaten 29-ball 46 and valuable contributions from captain Rohit Sharma (31 off 20 balls) and Rishabh Pant (26 off 15 balls) helped India post a competitive total of 170/8 in their 20 overs.
After Jos Butter won the toss and opted to field, the hosts made two changes in the bowling department. While right-arm pacer Richard Gleeson made his T20I debut in place of Tymal Mills, all-rounder David Willey replaced Reece Topley.
On the other hand, India made as many as four changes as Pant, Jadeja, Bumrah and Kohli were back in the playing XI after missing the first T20I. The four players who were replaced were Ishan Kishan, Deepak Hooda, Axar Patel and Arshdeep Singh.
Fresh from his scintillating ton in the rescheduled fifth Test at Edgbaston, in-form Pant was promoted to open the innings with Rohit.
The move turned out to be a masterstroke as Rohit and Pant provided a blitzkrieg start as India scored 49 runs in just 4.4 overs before debutant Gleeson picked the important wicket of the Indian captain.
India raced to 61/1 at the end of the powerplay but a double wicket maiden for Gleeson brought England back into the game. The 34-year-old England fast bowler had a debut to remember as he removed Virat Kohli (1) and Pant in consecutive deliveries.
Meanwhile, Suryakumar Yadav (15) and Hardik Pandya (12) stitched a 28-run stand for the fourth wicket, however, the duo perished in back-to-back deliveries to England all-rounder Chris Jordan.
Reeling at 89/5, Jadeja and Dinesh Karthik (12) forged a decent 33-run partnership before the latter was run-out to a Harry Brook throw.
However, Jadeja continued to play a sensible knock along with the rest of the batters to guide India to what turned out to be a match-winning total.
Jordan was the standout bowler for England as he claimed four wickets while Gleeson scalped three wickets on his debut.
Having clinched the series, India will lock horns with England in the third and final T20I at Trent Bridge in Nottingham on Sunday, July 10.
