Cricket for a cause
The Education for All (EFA) initiative came to life in 2010 under the leadership of Mrs. Nita M Ambani. As a part of this initiative EFA partners with NGOs across the city to enhance the quality of education provided to underprivileged children. EFA works towards the holistic development of children in need like re-enrolling dropouts, providing basic finance knowledge and aiding children with developmental disabilities.
One of the noteworthy activities conducted by EFA is the mobilisation of children from various NGOs across the city to witness a live IPL match at the Wankhede Stadium. Over 17,000 children on average have witnessed a match on average per season, watching their favourite players battle it out in the MI jersey. This year the EFA match will be organised on 8th May, when Mumbai Indians are due to face Sunrisers Hyderabad.
As the Founder and Chairperson of the Reliance Foundation, Mrs. Ambani emphasises the ability of sport to break barriers thus giving children a memorable experience through the EFA match. “When education and sports come together, it creates magic. This initiative aims to create a memorable experience for these kids on the EFA match day, right from the time they get on to the bus to when they go back home.”
Former India and Mumbai Indians captain, Sachin Tendulkar has seen and done it all, but the experience of walking out on the filled with a stadium full of cheering children is a moment to cherish and hold on to for a long time. “I have played in stadiums all over the world where fans are cheering. But in front of 17,000 kids, the experience is humbling. Knowing that this can inspire someone and make a difference to a child’s life, it feels all the more special.”
The EFA has impacted the lives of 70,000 underprivileged children till date, with the match against Sunrisers Hyderabad on 8th May ready to witness Wankhede Stadium in all its youthful glory.
