India end T20 World Cup campaign with a 9-wicket win over Namibia

Team India ended their T20 World Cup campaign with a comprehensive win over Namibia. The Men in Blue scripted a 9-wicket win and bowed out in style. Having won the toss, India restricted Namibia to 132/8, before replying with a 136/1 with the bat to finish the game.

This series saw the end of Ravi Shastri’s reign as Team India’s Head Coach, who will pass on the responsibilities to the newly appointed Rahul Dravid next. For Virat Kohli too, this game was the end of his captaincy responsibilities for Team India in the T20Is.

The resounding win was a consolatory farewell victory to both Ravi Shastri and Virat Kohli - the T20I captain, as India finished their stay at the T20 World Cup.

Below are the noteworthy points from tonight’s encounter:

Jadeja, Ashwin claim 3-wicket hauls

The Indian bowlers did well to keep the Namibian batters from scoring runs. They kept things tight and took wickets at regular intervals to keep the pressure on their opponents.

India’s spin twins Ravindra Jadeja and Ravichandran Ashwin picked up three wickets each to run riot through Namibia’s batting line-up. Jadeja’s 3/16 and Ashwin’s 3/20 was well backed by Jasprit Bumrah’s 2/19 to help restrict Namibia to 132/8 in 20 overs.

Couple of personal milestones for Rohit

An effortless shot from Rohit in the first delivery of the third over of the game not only took the ball across the boundary, but pushed Rohit to a special milestone too. The Indian opener became only the third batter in the world to reach 3000 T20I runs, after Chris Gayle and Virat Kohli.

Rohit also took three catches in the game to move to 44 instances of safe hands, the most for India in T20Is.

A memorable outing for India’s top order

India’s top order shone once more, putting up an 86-run partnership first, and then ending the match without the loss of another wicket. Initially, it was Rohit Sharma who was upping the ante, scoring 56 (37) with KL Rahul playing second fiddle.

Rahul took over steering duties from his opening partner once Rohit got out to score 54* (36), aptly aided by a supportive Suryakumar Yadav, who added 25* (19) during his stay at the crease. India chased down the total with 28 balls to spare.

Virat Kohli, T20I captain, bows out

Kohli walked out today for the toss, ready to lead his 50th T20I innings, and also his final one as per an announcement he made during IPL 2021. He took over from MS Dhoni in early 2017 and has since led India across all formats of the game.

He has 12 series wins in 17 that he’s led India in, a 11-match winning streak, between December 2019 to December 2020, and recorded a 143-run win against Ireland in Dublin in 2018, India’s biggest win by runs in this format of the game.

It’s curtains down for Ravi Shastri too with this game, a man who has encouraged the inclusion of a lot of young talents in the Indian cricket team. The Men in Blue will next be in action at the international stage on 17th November 2021, when the Black Caps will tour India for a 3-match T20I and 2-match Test series.
