India, England kickstart Test series at Trent Bridge

Team India are all set to begin their England tour after staying in the United Kingdom for almost two months.

The five-match Test series is going to pose a serious challenge for players from both sides. India will be determined to turn the tables after losing their last three Test series in England.

Team India are currently the No.2 Test side while England are No.4 in the ICC rankings. Both teams faced each other earlier this year with India winning 2-1 in a closely fought series.

We take you through some of the talking points ahead of the first Test at Trent Bridge.

Back in whites

Team India will be back to the Test format after taking part in the ICC World Test Championship Final which was won by New Zealand. However, the Virat Kohli-led side will be high on confidence following their spectacular performance in the last few years. They will also be keen on improving their record in England.

Rohit to open with Rahul

Shubman Gill was ruled out of the England tour after suffering a shin injury. Mayank Agarwal was all set to replace him before he was hit on the head by a Siraj bouncer. The concussion has forced him to sit out of the first Test.

KL Rahul is hence likely to be Rohit Sharma's opening partner at Trent Bridge. In the practice game against County Select XI, he was the lone centurion from India.

England to miss Ben Stokes

Ben Stokes has been a proven match-winner for England in the longest format. His absence is surely going to hurt the home team's prospects. Chris Woakes, Sam Curran and others would look to step up and make it count in both departments.

Siraj or Shardul to be the fourth pacer

India is likely to go ahead with a pacers department featuring Jasprit Bumrah, Ishant Sharma and Mohammed Shami. Ravichandran Ashwin may get a nod ahead of Ravindra Jadeja.

With no fast bowling all-rounder, Team India will have to choose between Mohammed Siraj and Shardul Thakur for the fourth pacer. Both right-arm pacers did well in Australia with Siraj turning out to be the pick amongst the bowlers.

Great memories of Nottingham

Team India have defeated England twice at the Trent Bridge in the last fifteen years. The previous occasion was in 2018 where Kohli stood out with scores of 97 and 103. Jasprit Bumrah and Hardik Pandya were also impressive with a five-wicket haul to their names.

The first Test match is scheduled to begin on Wednesday from 3:30 PM IST. Both teams will look to gain an edge and start the series on a winning note.
