INDvAFG ODIs preview: Test sealed, now onto #MissionWorldCup2027

Fresh off a dominant Test win versus Afghanistan, hosts India now switch gears to the ODI format as the countdown to the 2027 World Cup has officially begun. From the scenic mountains of Dharamshala to the spin friendly surfaces of Chennai, this is perfect preparation for the Men in Blue brigade to find the right combinations. This Indian side is packed with talent, experience where every game carries significance beyond the result. Can we be more excited to see Rohit Sharma tonk them big! Skipper Shubman Gill stands at the forefront of this journey, tasked with blending youthful ambition and all his experience into a side that is capable of conquering cricket’s biggest stage.

The architects at the top, the duo lead from the front with the bat combining elegance with consistency and has mastered the art of building key partnerships in the middle. Their ability to score big, rotate the strike, accelerate when necessary, brings out the best in the boys. On the other hand, India’s middle order enforcer Shreyas Iyer has been in good form lately and thrives under pressure situations. Apt at controlling the middle phase, he will be India’s X factor to watch out for.

On the other hand, KL Rahul brings flexibility in the middle and riding on a great ton during the Test match, his confidence will be high. He can anchor, finish and guide the young guns in the middle. His wicketkeeping abilities always stand out. Washington Sundar will be the utility player providing the added advantage with the bat and control with the ball. Arshdeep Singh, the left arm pacer offers swing with the new ball and accuracy during the death. Powerplay breakthroughs will be crucial from his end. Prasidh Krishna will hold key in extracting bounce on surfaces offering pace and carry. Prince Yadav, the exciting pace prospect could also get a look in depending on combinations as he brings freshness and hunger to the Indian side. Unfortunately, key all-rounder Hardik Pandya has been ruled out of the ODIs due to injury.

As for Afghanistan, their biggest strength lies in their experienced trio of Rashid Khan, Nabi and Hashmatullah Shahidi. Their spin department which also includes Allah Ghazanfar can choke opposition batters through the middle overs while also providing wicket taking threats. With the bat…Ibrahim Zadran, Gurbaz and Rahmat Shah provide a solid foundation.

Some key match ups in the middle to watch out for would be Gill against Afghanistan’s new ball attack. Shreyas Iyer would be looking to dominate the spinners particularly in Lucknow and Chennai. Once he gets going, he could prove to be extremely dangerous in the middle. Kuldeep Yadav could dictate the tempo of the series due to his great wicket taking abilities at crucial junctures in the game.
