James Pattinson: A bullet train, now in Blue & Gold
Chin. Ribs. Elbow. Head. These are all the areas that James Pattinson is capable of hitting a batsman when he marks his run-up.
Right-arm quick James Pattinson can rip through batting line-ups on his given day. Not just pace but Pattinson turned heads with his swing when he scalped six wickets for Victoria in a domestic one-day game against New South Wales in 2009-10.
James was also a part of the Australian U-19 set-up in 2008. Like many cricketers from Down Under, James too started with backyard cricket. The Victorian played his early cricket with brother Darren Pattinson who would go on to represent England in a solitary Test. Now imagine having an Ashes rivalry in one family.
Cut to 2011. James made his ODI debut against Bangladesh in Bangladesh and impressed with his pace. He had to wait for his Test debut but when it finally happened later that year at The Gabba, James bagged a couple of five wicket hauls in his first two outings.
Injuries have curtailed his career but Pattinson never gave up. The next five years saw him just play 17 Tests with a troubled lower-back. A relapse of his lower back injury meant that Pattinson had to undergo a spine surgery in 2017 -- those who know, our bowling coach Shane Bond had also opted for the same treatment in a bid to prolong his career.
Though Pattinson has not been a part of the limited overs side for the Kangaroos, he became a regular feature of their Test squad last year when he made his return to Australia’s Ashes side. 11 years since his debut, Pattinson still has the ability to hurl bouncers close to 150 kmph which sets him apart. In 21 Tests, Pattinson has 81 wickets to his name. Safe to say, his extra pace will come in handy on the turfs of UAE.
A summary of his T20 stats:
Mat: 39
Wkts: 47
BBM: 5/33
Ave: 24.12
Eco: 8.25
SR: 17.5
30-year-old Pattinson has made it to the headlines with consistent wickets in the recent past. His career-best 5/33 came in this year’s Big Bash League.
At 17.5, his strike rate is testimony to his wicket-taking abilities. Pattinson did create magic with the ball in Brisbane Heat’s blue jersey and now it’s time to see him do the same in the MI Blue and Gold.
