Matreja ton lights up day 1 of MI Junior 2020

Hunar Matreja from Our Lady of Perpetual Succour (OLPS) High School, scored a maiden ton to light up the opening day of the second edition of the much-awaited Mumbai Indians Junior tournament. The talented batsman from Chembur scored 107 runs off just 89 balls to help his team thrash the boys of St. Xavier's High School (Fort) by 29 runs at Cross Maidan, Churchgate here on Monday.

Batting first, Matreja’s dominating knock lifted OLPS total to 203/8 in 32 overs. Aryan Prabhakar contributed with a sedate 21 to give some support to Matreja. Chasing a challenging target in 32 overs, St. Xavier's High School (Fort) lost wickets at regular intervals and just managed 174/8. Matreja was named as the 'Player of the Match.’

In another match, Rizvi Springfield's 14-year-old captain Roshan Kanojiya missed a well-deserved hundred but his impressive knock of 99 runs in 63 balls led his team to an emphatic 287-run victory.

His batting partner Harsh Aghav supported him ably with 67 runs, as Rizvi posted a mammoth total of 363/5 from their stipulated 40 overs. Aghav later picked a three-wicket haul to help Rizvi bundle out RBK Global School (Bhayendar) for 76 in 24 overs.

Meanwhile, Jay Shah of Sheth Virchand Devji Secondary English Medium School (Ghatkopar) picked the first fifer of the tournament against Holy Cross High School (Kurla) to help his side defend a total of 189 and star in a 23-run win.  Shah won the Player of the Match award.

Earlier, the tournament was inaugurated by Mr. Sanjay Naik, Secretary, Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA).  Former Indian pacer and Mumbai Indians’ Director of Cricket Operations, Zaheer Khan carried out an interactive session with budding cricketers participating in MI Junior 2020 at the famous Cross Maidan. Reminiscing about the fond memories of his time with the National Cricket Club, Khan was glad to revisit the same pitch where the cornerstone of his career was laid.
