“MI have always played an exciting brand of cricket”: Luke Williams
The legacy is already strong as two-time WPL champions Mumbai Indians prepare for another exciting season. Head Coach Luke Williams, joins the MI set up bringing in fresh ideas, his own magical energy and a clear ambition-to build on what has already been achieved and to further create something even more special with this group.
As he walks into a franchise built on belief, togetherness and a winning culture… Luke takes us inside his vision and plans for the season ahead. What followed was more than just a conversation, it was pure cricketing insights with a lot of warmth.
Firstly, sharing his reactions on learning that he would be coaching the MI Women’s team. Luke said, “Absolutely thrilled when I got the news, I was going to be offered the position with such a prestigious franchise. This team has already won two WPL titles. I am just excited to get started… meet the playing group, support staff and get to work.”
He further emphasised about peaking at the right time and revealed his vision ahead for Mumbai Indians. “Each season is very different; it is all about trying to build a really strong spirit amongst the group. It is all about trying to get the players together on and off the field. The players and support staff are very clear with their roles. It is all about building confidence during a tournament and peaking at the right time. Have enough games to qualify for the final and play our best cricket when it counts in the end.”
One of the most exciting parts of the new role for Williams will be working with captain Harmanpreet Kaur. He expressed, “This aspect is one of the most exciting parts about taking this role on. I have been in the opposite camp versus Harmanpreet in many competitions, and around the world, and have seen what a strong player and how good a leader she is. So, I am excited to work with her and really get the best out of the team for this season.”
Having a keen eye to spot talent and develop youngsters, Luke opened up about what player development would look like in his coaching world. “We have a great set of core players in the squad along with Harmanpreet Kaur. At the other end, we also have some young exciting talents, so together we form a strong unit. I am sure the team will play an exciting brand of cricket. They have tasted success before and moreover after last year, the group is going to be really hungry to bounce back this year and perform well. I am really excited to be part of the competition this year.”
Modern day T20 is increasingly driven by numbers and match ups but players also rely on instinct. On being asked how he would find a balance between the two. Luke opined, “It is different for different players and I am someone who does like numbers along with data and analytics…so a lot of responsibility is to take all that information and use it where it fits best. At the end, it is all about taking an approach of what a player needs and try to build on that.”
Mumbai Indians is known for giving young players opportunities alongside established players. How important would that blend be eventually. Our coach highlighted, “MI have always played an exciting brand of cricket and are quite intimidating as a team with a really strong fan base. We have a blend of players who can take the game away from oppositions very quickly. The style of cricket we would want to play is to put other teams under pressure and to never give up.”
He finally signed off by giving a message for our Paltan, “Can’t wait to see you at the games Paltan. You are indeed the heart and soul of the franchise. Your support plays such an important role in the success of the team, in the coming season and the future.”
