“MI have supported me, have shown belief and backed me a lot”: Raghu Sharma
Mumbai Indians 🤝 talents scripting big stories. This is exactly what happened on 4th May 2026 at Wankhede where our very own Raghu Sharma wrote his own beautiful chapter with spin, heart and a maiden IPL wicket, that will be remembered for a long time to come. 💙
Four overs, 36 runs, one wicket. This was not just any other spell, it was a breakthrough one where several heads turned and took notice of Raghu, who announced his arrival in a brilliant fashion. When the batters came hard, the talented bowler held his nerve and snapped the key wicket of Akshat Raghuvanshi. His shot did not quite come off well and before one blinked, the catch was taken by Raghu. The celebration was pure unfiltered joy and happiness. 🫶😁
Post the game, speaking to IPLT20, Raghu shared his whole journey and thanked Mumbai Indians for their constant support and belief. It was indeed a dream come true for him to get his maiden IPL wicket.
Firstly, talking about the white chit, he showed the entire stadium after picking his maiden wicket. Sharma said, “I thought that today if I get a wicket, I will definitely put this out. Big thanks to Mumbai Indians because it has been a painful 15 years for me, how I started cricket and a lot of things happened in my life as well. Today, by the grace of God, I just came here… MI supported me and have believed in me. They backed me a lot and also retained me. Now, I am just giving them confidence that yes, I can also do that for them as well.”
Speaking about how he was in 2011, Raghu added, “We have a family background of all engineers and doctors. I am also an electrical engineer. I wasn’t fit back then, being 102 kgs. But still I worked hard. Back then, when I saw Dhoni Sir hitting that final six, it gave me determination that I too can do this. But my father said, cricket is not for you as you would have to run around a lot. I started at 21, by then I had missed out on playing age group cricket. But still I was determined and focused on my target that one day definitely I would achieve everything.”
Raghu also remarked, “I slowly and steadily did it and learnt a lot with all the experience since, I have also played in Sri Lanka and English county too. Age is not a number and if you are preparing yourself for this kind of IPL platform, one needs to be hardworking and mentally very strong because it needs maturity rather than skills. Maturity is what makes one a good bowler, especially on this platform.” 💙
He finally reflected on his immense faith in God and how continuous training has helped him along the journey, “Lord Jagannath supported me a lot. I went to Puri, where I trained on the beach and had Mahaprasad. At that moment, I knew… If God is there then everything is possible for me. For 15 years, I would practice leg spin for six days a week every single day. Till now, I would bowl around 10 overs. You have to continuously keep bowling, then automatically your wrist will work. I always have a plan before every single match, that I will bowl in these certain areas. All these aspects have helped me over the last 15 years and now you can see the results.”
