“One bad game doesn’t mean we are a bad team”: Shabnim Ismail
It was an evening to forget for the Mumbai Indians, who didn’t quite hit their straps with bat and ball, succumbing to a nine-wicket loss to the Delhi Capitals in the last game in their Bengaluru leg. Shabnim Ismail, who bowled at good pace in her first spell, was at the press conference after the game. Excerpts..
Thoughts on the game
DC bowled really well today. They bowled in good areas. Just obviously there’s not a lot of negatives to take. We take the momentum and we go into the next game. One bad game doesn’t mean we are a bad team. But we know what we need to do going forward and hopefully we can do that in the next game.
On the impact of the toss on the result
The toss plays a major role. You’ve see teams that bowl first come out as winners 99 percent of the time. Today we lost the toss, but that doesn’t mean anything as we go into the semi-finals and the finals. We need to be able to bat or bowl first in any situation.
Whether the dew is playing a role in the second innings
We knew that dew is not going to be much of a factor here. Whether you are batting or bowling here, the first six overs is going to be crucial. For batters to capitalize because there are only two fielders outside and for bowlers, there is a lot of movement for bowlers which we need to capitalize. That’s what we practice behind the scenes.
On the DC openers getting off to a flier
We’re not always going to take wickets in the powerplay but we try and keep them down to five an over or four an over. It was always going to be a tough chase. DC have got Shafali (Verma) and Meg Lanning, which is two world class batters, as we’ve got Yatika Bhatia and Hayley (Matthews). We didn’t have an early breakthrough today. But we didn’t have enough runs on the board and hopefully we can do better in the next game.
On why teams have preferred chasing at the Chinnaswamy stadium
Teams are assessing wickets. For us, it was easier to bow first because we know what the wicket is doing. Batters are then assessing as the game goes on. That just puts a bit of a much more positive vive before going in to bat.
