Robin Singh: Boult and Pattinson were the two good takeaways

After the conclusion of the first game, Mumbai Indians batting coach Robin Singh shared his thoughts in the first episode of this season’s Coach Cam.

Despite losing the toss against CSK, Mumbai Indians started off well while both batting and bowling but couldn’t keep the momentum going for too long. Their next clash is also in Abu Dhabi against the Kolkata Knight Riders.

Talking to MITV, Robin reflected upon the batting collapse, some fielding lapses and a few takeaways from the game. While it was easier to bat under the lights, he felt that the team could have done better in all departments.

With our sort of batting lineup, we should post 180 on most occasions

The team was in a strong position at 121/3 with the likes of Kieron Pollard and Krunal Pandya yet to arrive at the crease. However, a batting collapse restricted MI to a total of 162/9. Robin highlighted the same and felt that no batsman took the responsibility to stay till the end and guide the team to a respectable total.

“I think all the batters looked like they were in decent form. It's just that no one really took the responsibility and carried on. With our sort of batting line-up, I think we should be posting 180 on the board on most occasions. Instances where we lost back-to-back wickets, that is something you don't want to do in this format, especially when you have the momentum. I think the batters got a little ahead of themselves. We need to understand that the boundaries are huge here. It's almost 75-80 metres from the top end. So it's not like most of the Indian grounds.”

Boult and Pattinson were the two good takeaways

Trent Boult and James Pattinson who donned the new ball struck early in the innings. In the first over, Boult who was hit for a boundary on the previous delivery bowled an inswinger to trap Shane Watson. In the next over, it was Pattinson who got the better of Murali Vijay. Robin asserted that their performances were a good takeaway for the team.

“James (Pattinson) did well. In the first opportunity he got, he bowled exceptionally well up front as well as Trent Boult. I think these were the two good takeaways for us. The spinners did a decent job because batting second here is relatively easier. There was a bit of dew on the surface so it sort of helped the batsmen. We probably didn’t execute as well as we could have and I would say our fielding let us down a little bit. So I think in all three areas, we were short.”
