After clinching both the white-ball series in England, the Indian cricket team will square off against hosts West Indies in a three-match ODI series starting on Friday, July 22.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) decided to rest several of their first-team players including captain Rohit Sharma, Jasprit Bumrah, Virat Kohli, Rishabh Pant, Hardik Pandya and Mohammed Shami for the upcoming ODI series in the Caribbean.

In the absence of Rohit, his long-time opening batting partner Shikhar Dhawan has been handed the responsibility of leading the Indian ODI squad. Star all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja has been named Dhawan’s deputy.

Under Dhawan’s captaincy, India won the three-match ODI series 2-1 in Sri Lanka last year.

Meanwhile, talented young batter Shubman Gill and wicket-keeper batter Sanju Samson have made a comeback to India’s ODI squad. While Gill returns to the Indian ODI set-up for the first time since the tour of Australia in 2020, Samson replaces Rishabh Pant as the second wicket-keeper apart from Ishan Kishan.

The fast bowling options in the 16-man Indian ODI squad includes Arshdeep Singh, Mohammed Siraj, Avesh Khan, Prasidh Krishna and Shardul Thakur. Yuzvendra Chahal, Axar Patel and Jadeja are the three spinners in the squad.

On the other hand, West Indies will look to bounce back after being whitewashed 0-3 by Bangladesh in the recently-concluded ODI home series.

Led by Nicholas Pooran, the hosts have also announced their 13-man squad for the India series.

Former West Indies captain Jason Holder returns to the ODI squad after being rested against Bangladesh.

Left-arm spinner Gudakesh Motie, who impressed in the Bangladesh series, has also retained his place in the West Indies ODI set-up.

West Indies vs India ODI head-to-head record

India have a slight edge over West Indies in the ODI head-to-head record, winning 67 of the 136 matches that they have played so far. West Indies have secured 63 victories. Two matches have been tied while four matches have ended in no results.

Players to watch out

India’s swashbuckling batter Suryakumar Yadav will be one of the players to watch out for. After amassing 171 runs in the three T20Is against England, Suryakumar had an ordinary ODI series - scoring just 43 runs in three matches. With India resting several of their top stars, the Mumbai Indians star will look to take some additional responsibility in the middle-order and score some big runs in the Caribbean.

In the bowling department, India’s Yuzvendra Chahal will play an important role. The star leg-spinner was one of the standout bowlers in England, picking seven wickets in three ODIs at an economy of 5.35.

For West Indies, captain Nicholas Pooran will hope to continue his impressive form against a strong Indian side. The southpaw amassed 108 runs in three T20Is against Bangladesh and followed it up by scoring 91 runs in the three ODIs. A lot will depend on Pooran if the hosts are to clinch the ODI series against India.

All the three West Indies vs India ODIs will be played at the Queen’s Park Oval in Port of Spain, Trinidad. Matches will start at 7:00 PM IST.
