Talking to Bond and Boom helped me realise my strengths: Dan Sams

Our Aussie pacer Daniel Sams answered the media’s questions ahead of our clash against the Kolkata Knight Riders on May 9th.

Sams, who was the star in our thrilling win against Gujarat Titans, had a rough start to the season but has bounced back in fine fashion. He credited two people in particular for that turnaround.

“I worked with Shane Bond and Jasprit (Bumrah). We can always plan for a batter but Jasprit has that strength to execute the yorker - which is his strength - regardless of what the batter does. Conversations with them helped me realise that I was only focusing on the batter’s weaknesses and not my strengths,” revealed Sams.

“In crunch moments like that last over, it’s about winning the percentages in my favour and thinking what I can execute best. My go-to balls are my slower variations, it’s just one ball but I can bowl it in different areas. It’s the same conversations with Bondy, figuring out the angles and the finer details. It’s figuring out what works and working on that in training,” he elaborated.

The match against KKR earlier in the season saw a low point for Sams - where he conceded 35 runs in an over to Pat Cummins. The pacer admitted that it had taken a while for him to take that in but he came out of it stronger.

“You question what you do - it’s natural, all athletes do that. It took a bit of time to move on from that and see what I can learn from this. Everyone here has been amazing, the conversations have been about what I have done in the past, what I have achieved. Looking at previous footage and talking to Bondy, Mahela and Jasprit is how I realised that I was not bowling my best balls,” stated Sams.

On being asked if the win against GT gave confidence to the team, Sams pointed out one essential aspect in which it has helped the team.

“The last win is massive for our confidence - not so much the result but how we dealt with mentally in those situations. It’s a sort of mini tournament for us now, these remaining games. Every game is important for us as players, it’s not about one game having more value than the other. The motivation is to finish this season well and we want to prove how good a team we are in the coming games,” he said.

Some honest answers from Sams on how he came back from a low point provides a lot of motivation for us and we hope the momentum of two consecutive wins helps us in the next match!
