“Want to win both remaining games for MI and keep the flag flying high”: Tilak Varma
Paltan, the clash at Eden Gardens versus Kolkata Knight Riders promises to be high-octane and Mumbai Indians know exactly what these big occasions demand. Expect intensity, fearless cricket and a battle where momentum could swing with every over. Before the lights shine bright and the rivalry takes center stage on 20th May 2026, all-rounder Tilak Varma graced MI Charcha and engaged in a conversation packed with honesty, laughs and unheard stories. 💙
Sharing his thoughts on garnering a century against the Gujarat Titans and then an unbeaten 75 versus the Punjab Kings in the last encounter pulling off a tricky chase, TV said, “I always look to take the game deep. I know my game…and what I am capable of doing. I take a little time in the middle, settle down and then I come up with different plans as to which bowler needs to be attacked and in which over we need to accelerate with the run rate. One has to remain calm and back their basics.”
Smashing one of the longest sixes in the season, 106 meters off Yuzvendra Chahal’s bowling during the last match, he reflected, “That particular day, the wicket was not a very easy one and the ball was staying low. I respected Yuzi’s deliveries initially and then when I needed to smash shots, I backed myself. I even told Rohit Sharma and Sherfane Rutherford that either you both can go for a big hit or take a single and give me strike, I will go for the charge.”
During a 2022 interview, Tilak said that he would play at any position the team commands of him. To achieve this feat, he shared about a few technical adjustments conquered over the years.
“Batting anywhere from three to seven is difficult. At the same time when the team needs you… only one thing goes on in my mind, as to how to make my team win. I always say, I want to win championships whether I play for MI, Hyderabad or for India. For that, one needs to be ready to bat at any position. In the beginning it was a little difficult, but then I had to adapt to scenarios. If you are flexible then you can fit into any squad, being the most reliable player. Batting with the new ball, during the middle overs and in the death overs are all different.”
Looking back at his five-year journey in the Blue and Gold, Tilak spoke about what it has been to be a part of the MI journey. “I feel proud, but unless I win a championship title for MI, the numbers do not matter to me. I have been a part of the World Cup and Asia Cup victories and the only thing remaining for me is to win an IPL for MI. It will not happen this year, but hopefully we will come back stronger next season. MI has a great legacy and with two more games left I want to win both the games for MI and keep that flag flying high.”
On being asked about having a great 2022 season as a 19-year-old for MI and what were his key memories from that year, Tilak opined, “Back then when I entered, there were a lot of expectations. MI has backed a lot of youngsters and given us confidence. At the same time, I want to do well and show the world what I am capable of. I was a bit nervous but was still focusing on my basics, talking to my coach, Rohit Sharma and all support staff as well. Everyone helped me during that phase. From there on, I have evolved as a cricketer on the field and as a person off it too.”
Sharing that unreal feeling of winning the 2026 T20 World Cup for India, he said, “The aim from the start was to win the World Cup. It was surreal and very difficult to put into words what we were feeling. It was indeed a dream come true moment. We had our families and friends there too, so it was a very special feeling. Hard work and discipline were the key to winning it.”
On a lighter note, he spoke about the Mumbai connection he has… much before Mumbai Indians picked him, “Not many know that Mumbai has a very special place in my heart as my mother’s sister stays in Mumbai. Four months after I was born, I would frequently visit Mumbai. Now being with MI, has only made my connection deeper.”
With two games left, finally sharing a message for the Paltan, TV concluded with, “We are really sorry, we could not grab the IPL title this year. We will come back stronger next year and win the trophy for Mumbai Indians.” 💙🏆
