“We have a break now, we will regroup, think and discuss”: Mahela Jayawardene

Yes, indeed a very tough pill to swallow…one of those nights where nothing clicked for the Mumbai Indians 😔. The 103-run defeat margin against the Chennai Super Kings at Wankhede just reflected how things panned out. Speaking at the post-match press conference, MI Head Coach, Mahela Jayawardene, kept it measured, real and honest. He acknowledged the gaps, stressing the importance of regrouping, learning and coming back with positive intent. ✊

Analyzing where MI went wrong as a team in the first half of the season, he said, “We have managed just four points from seven matches. Disappointed to have lost this game. We lost our rhythm in the two powerplays itself, first with the ball and then with the bat. We have a break now, we will think and discuss what we need to do in the next seven games.”

“Here too, we bowled well in patches but when 20-plus extra runs are given away, it is difficult to claw back into the game. As a team we all have to improve.”

Sharing his thoughts about electing to chase first, MJ opined, “We discussed and felt comfortable chasing. Sometimes it works and sometimes it does not. The wicket stayed the same. We just had to bat well, but unfortunately that did not happen.”

One of the positives for Mumbai Indians to come out of this game was the performance of Allah Ghazanfar, who with his spell of 2/25 in his four overs, put the brakes on CSK’s scoring in the middle overs. Praising the young spinner’s effort, Mahela shared, “Allah Ghazanfar bowled well. He is very brave and maturing with time. The more games he plays in the middle. he will learn a lot. We, as a unit, will keep backing him to do what he does best.”

A stumble, but not a full stop. We march ahead, as we now face Sunrisers Hyderabad on 29th April 2026 at the big W once again. 💙
