MIvRCB: Ellyse Perry’s all-round show denies us a direct WPL Final entry tonight
Read it in Hindi.
Read it in Marathi.
Right, a bit of it depends on the result tomorrow, but we have a chance of redeeming this in three days. There was plenty at stake in this contest. RCB were eyeing qualification. Mumbai Indians were eyeing the top spot. Unfortunately for us, it wasn’t our day. Our batters couldn’t get going with the bat as we succumbed to an under-par score, and despite the fight with the ball, it wasn’t enough. Here’s how it went..
Well, Ellyse Perry happened
She is a certified legend of the game, and unfortunately, we were on the wrong end of things today. Six wickets with the ball, an unbeaten 40 with the bat in the chase. The ball nipped around, and she made full use of the fresh pitch that was on offer, bowling stump-to-stump and getting four of the batters bowled, and two LBW.
From a solid powerplay to a collapse, courtesy Perry
Hayley Matthews and her new opening partner for the night, S Sajana, who stood in for an unwell Yastika Bhatia, got MI off to a good start in the powerplay, with 43 runs being scored, and the first wicket falling only off the last ball of the sixth over. Nat Sciver-Brunt and Sajana too had a decent recovery post that, but unfortunately, seven wickets fell for 21 runs, which included six of them to Perry. And just like that, the innings was derailed, and MI were bowled out for 113 in 19 overs.
Perry again in the chase to ruin the momentum after early breakthroughs
22/1 to 25/2 to 39/3 in 6.1 overs. We were well and truly in the game. It was on! Again, unfortunately, it was Perry’s night, and along with Richo Ghosh, stitched together a 76-run partnership to bat us out of the game. A couple of dropped catches didn’t help our cause either.
Never mind. It’s good to get these games out of the system in the league stage itself. Here's the qualification scenario now: For now, we’ll have to wait on Delhi Capitals’ result against the Gujarat Giants. A loss for DC by 120 runs or with 90 balls to spare would push their NRR below MI’s, and give us a direct entry into the Final. Still, directly the Final or the Final via the Eliminator, we now are in the must-win territory. If we go via the Eliminator, it's going to be a repeat of this game, MI vs RCB. This is where the MI spirit comes out. We will be back, this time with a vengeance.
Paltan, we know you’re right behind us. Let’s up the ante!
Brief scores: Mumbai Indians 113 all-out (19 overs) (S Sajana 30, Hayley Matthews 26; Ellyse Perry 6/15) lost to Royal Challengers Bangalore 115/3 (15 overs) (Ellyse Perry 40, Richa Ghosh 36; Hayley Matthews 1/11) by 7 wickets
