Mumbai Indians star batter Suryakumar Yadav has almost secured his spot in Team India’s squad for the upcoming ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2022 scheduled to be played in Australia in October and November.
The flamboyant batter is currently the highest-ranked Indian batter in ICC T20I player rankings, rising up to the second spot in the latest ICC Men’s T20I batting rankings after his 44-ball 76 in the third T20I against West Indies.
Since making his T20 international debut against England at Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad in 2021, the swashbuckling batter has continued to impress in the shortest format.
In his short T20I career, the 31-year-old has already amassed 572 runs in 21 matches at a magnificent strike rate of 176 while also maintaining a decent average of 35.75. Yadav has registered one hundred and four fifties in the T20I format so far.
During India’s tour of England 2022, Suryakumar once again showcased his incredible hitting ability as he smashed his maiden T20I hundred at Trent Bridge Cricket Ground in Nottingham earlier in July.
Batting at number four, the right-handed batter scored 117 off just 55 balls at a staggering strike rate of 212.73. His scintillating knock was laced with 14 fours and six maximums. Interestingly, Suryakumar fell just shy of Rohit Sharma’s highest individual score (118) for India in T20Is.
Sky loves to bat against England in T20 international matches, with his 117-run knock at Trent Bridge taking his tally to 260 runs in five T20I innings against the Three Lions. He maintains a batting average of 52.00 and a strike rate of 195.48 against the 2010 T20 World Cup winners.
Apart from proving his mettle for India, Suryakumar has been one of Mumbai Indians’ biggest match-winners in the Indian Premier League (IPL) over the years.
Despite playing just eight matches in IPL 2022, the middle-order batter accumulated 303 runs at an average of 43.29 and a strike rate of 145.671 including three half-centuries before injury ruled him out of the tournament.
Such has been his remarkable consistency, Suryakumar Yadav has hit 300-plus runs in each of his last five IPL campaigns.
During the 2018 season, the Mumbai-born cricketer was the highest run-getter for Mumbai Indians, having scored 512 runs in 14 matches at an average of 36.57 including registering four fifties to his name. This was his best performance in the high-profile league till date.
Overall, Suryakumar has scored 2,644 runs in 123 IPL matches at an average of 30.39 and a strike rate of 136.78. He has hit 16 half-centuries in the T20 League so far.
Often labelled as India’s 360-degree player, Suryakumar Kumar has a classic book of shots. The worthy mentions are cover drive, flick, sweep behind square, classic pull, cut shot towards third man, baithak, sweep and scoop shots.
Recently, Suryakumar left fans in awe during his 44-ball 76 against West Indies. In the 10th over, Sky lofted a Alzarri Joseph delivery over wide long off for a 79-metre six. The shot was well-received by the commentators and Indian fans, and has its own fan base on the internet.
An immensely talented batter, Sky will look to showcase his match-winning attributes in the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup 2022 later this year.
