CWC 2023 Match 4, Wins 4: Kohli excellence floors Bangladesh
Run chase. Century. Win by a SIX. Virat Kohli ticked all the boxes to ensure India got FOUR wins in four games at the ICC ODI World Cup 2023, following a seven-wicket triumph over Bangladesh.
Bangladesh won the toss, batted first and would post 256/8 in 50 overs. After Litton Das (66), Tanzid Hasan (51) and Mahmudullah (46) influenced the Bangla Tigers’ batting, the neighbours would be riddled at intervals by Ravindra Jadeja (2/38), Jasprit Bumrah (2/41) and Mohammed Siraj (2/60).
India’s chase of 257 runs began swiftly with an 88-run partnership by openers Rohit Sharma (48) and Shubman Gill. While Gill (53) injected confidence into the chase with his maiden World Cup fifty, he would set the stage for ‘Run Machine' Virat Kohli to carry India to victory with a record-equalling 48th ODI century (103).
Here are the consolidated highlights of the game.
14.4 overs later… India has a breakthrough
The letter ‘P’ in Kuldeep stands for patience and persistence, and the left-arm spinner proved it when he dismissed Tanzid Hasan (51) with a plumb delivery. Bowls a flipper, the batter misreads and goes for a sweep, the ball beats the batter on the inside edge to get struck in front, and the umpire’s finger signals a wicket.
Jaddu opens his account
Ravindra Jadeja accepted an invitation from Kuldeep Yadav to join the wickets’ party, and he entered in a similar way that saw Tanzid Hasan lose his wicket. Jaddu’s back-of-a-length delivery beat Najmul Hossain Shanto’s inside edge and hit his left leg.
He would pocket another dismissal, this time tricking half-centurion Liton Das (66) to miscue his shot straight into the hands of Shubman Gill at long-off.
Spinners out; Pacers initiate demolition run
Starting with KL Rahul’s blinder of a catch to dismiss Mehidy Hasan Miraz off Mohammed Siraj, the Indian pace setup upped the ante to wind up the Bangladesh innings at 256/8 in 50 overs.
The Rahul-Siraj pair would combine once again as they got rid of Nasum Ahmed (14) in the 47th over. Shardul Thakur’s hunt for a wicket in the game bore fruit in the 38th over. Towhid Hridoy’s frustrating night ended, when he hit a mistimed shot into the air for Shubman Gill to complete his second catch of the game.
Boom Boom’s spell for the day ended with figures of 2/41 in his 10 overs. Initially, he claimed the scalp of Mushfiqur Rahim (38) when the Bangladesh star slammed a shot towards backward point, but a certain Ravi Jadeja intercepted through and claimed a potential catch of the match.
Bumrah’s second dismissal, in hindsight, was a CLASSIC JASPRIT BUMRAH dismissal. Aimed at the stumps, a yorker and BOOM! Bails clipped off the stumps, and Mahmudullah is sent back for 46.
Ro-aring start for India
With 217 runs already this term, Rohit Sharma showed no signs of stopping as he raced to 48 runs in 40 balls. The Hitman enthralled the audience at the MCA Stadium with seven boundaries and two sixes in the bank. But, he would depart two runs short of a well–deserved fifty.
Shubman makes BAN bowlers feel Gill-ty
After Rohit’s exit, Shubman Gill took over the baton and grabbed the opportunity to notch his maiden fifty in the ODI World Cup. He would depart when his lofted attempt for a six would fall inches short into the hands of Mahmudullah off Mehidy Hasan Miraz.
The ‘Run Machine’ Rises
If you invite Virat Kohli to chase a target, know that the ‘Run Machine’ executes the mission to the T. He established 40-plus run stands with Shubman Gill and Shreyas Iyer (19) before a game-defining 83-run partnership alongside KL Rahul carried India to victory with seven wickets in hand, and the target was achieved inside 41.3 overs.
Brief scores: India 261/3 (Virat Kohli 103*, Shubman Gill 53; Mehidy Hasan Miraz 2/47) BEAT Bangladesh 256/8 (Litton Das 66, Tanzid Hasan 51; Ravindra Jadeja 2/38) by seven wickets.
