England vs India 5th Test Day 5: Hosts seal highest successful run chase in Test

By Mumbai Indians

The Indian cricket team ended Day 1 of the England vs India 5th Test with a score of 338/7.

England elected to bowl first upon winning the toss, and made a breakthrough as early as in 6.2 overs. James Anderson grabbed the wickets of openers Shubman Gill and Cheteshwar Pujara before the lunch was called at 20.1 overs due to the intrusion of rain. India ended the first session at 53/2.

The second session saw 121 runs scored and three batters - Hanuma Vihari, Virat Kohli and Shreyas Iyer - depart early. But, the arrivals of Rishabh Pant and Ravindra Jadeja kickstarted the Indian batting order’s revival into the tie as they went into tea with a score of 174/5.

The final session of Day 1 saw India go past 300 in 63.1 overs, with Pant notching his fifth century in 89 balls. In doing so, he broke MS Dhoni’s record for the fastest Test century by an Indian wicket-keeper.

The 24-year-old, additionally, became the first visiting wicket-keeper to register two Test centuries in England. Pant’s innings ended at 146, four short of hitting his second 150-plus score.

Rishabh Pant’s 222-run partnership with Ravindra Jadeja is India’s highest for the sixth wicket against England, and matched the same run stand that Sachin Tendulkar stitched with Mohammad Azharuddin in Cape Town in 1997.

Ravindra Jadeja, who also contributed to India’s comeback in the second session, ended Day 1 of the Edgbaston Test with 83 runs in 163 deliveries alongside Mohammed Shami at the crease.

India will reconvene for Day 2’s play at 3 PM on the Sony SIX and Sony SIX HD TV channels in India and on SonyLIV for the live streaming audience.

Day 2:

An impressive all-round show from stand-in captain Jasprit Bumrah and all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja’s scintillating ton have put India in a commanding position against hosts England at the end of day 2 of the rescheduled fifth Test at Edgbaston on Saturday.

Rain played spoilsport and only 38.5 overs were bowled throughout the day as India rode on Bumrah’s three wickets while Mohammed Shami and Mohammed Siraj bagged one wicket each to leave England tottering at 84/5 at the end of day 2.

While India captain removed openers Alex Lees (6), Zak Crawley (9) and Ollie Pope (10), Siraj took the important wicket of England talisman Joe Root (31).

Meanwhile, Shami also added to his tally as he removed nightwatchman Jack Leach, who didn’t trouble the scorers.

At stumps on day two, England captain Ben Stokes (0) and in-form Jonny Bairstow (12) were at the crease.

Earlier in the day, India took control of the game after Jadeja notched up his third Test century (104 off 194 balls) while Bumrah smashed an unbeaten 16-ball 31 to help the visitors post 416 in their first innings.

During India’s innings, Bumrah hammered fast bowler Stuart Broad for a 35-run over as the England pacer now holds the unwanted record of conceding the most runs off an over in Test cricket history.

Resuming on 338/7, India added 78 runs in 11.5 overs before England wrapped up the innings.

Wicket-keeper batter Rishabh Pant’s 146 off just 111 balls had put India in a strong position at the end of day 1 on Friday.

The visitors are currently leading the five-match Test series 2-1 and are eyeing their first Test series win in England since 2007.

India will look to continue their dominance when play resumes on day 3 at 3 PM at Edgbaston.

Day 3:

The Indian cricket team head into Day 4 of the ENG vs IND fifth Test with a score of 125/3 at stumps, and a lead of 257 runs.

Day 3’s play began with Mohammed Shami bowling the 28th over of England’s first innings and ending it as a maiden. It took 10 overs for the Indian bowlers to draw the first blood as Shardul Thakur grabbed the wicket of Ben Stokes. Captain Jasprit Bumrah, who dropped Stokes at 37.3 overs, redeemed himself with the second catch attempt at 37.4 overs to dismiss the hosts’ skipper.

Despite the intrusion of rain, Jonny Bairstow set the stage for England to score 284 in their first innings with a 140-ball 106. After struggling initially with 16 runs from 64 balls, the English batter reached his 100 in 119 deliveries.

Bairstow, with this third successive Test century, emulated Michael Clarke (2012) in hitting five or more hundreds in Tests in a calendar year as a number five batter or below.

India’s second innings began with Shubman Gill falling in the very first over off a James Anderson delivery. The opener’s attempt to play Anderson’ short of a length delivery took a thick edge and went towards Zak Crawley at second slip.

After going into Tea at 37/1 in 13 overs, India crossed 50 in 17.4 overs and reached 100 in 35.4 overs.

Cheteshwar Pujara notched his 33rd half-century in Tests, his second half-ton in Tests in 2022 following his 86-ball 50 against South Africa in January 2022. He was supported by Rishabh Pant, with the first-innings centurion unbeaten on 30 at stumps.

India head into Day 4 of the England vs India 5th Test with a 50-run partnership for the fourth wicket between Pujara and Pant. This is the fifth consecutive 50-plus run stand between the pair in Tests (50*, 119, 61, 148, 53).

Stay tuned to the penultimate day of the ongoing England vs India 5th Test, which begins at 3PM on Monday, July 4.

Day 4:

The Indian cricket team are seven wickets away from registering a Test series win in England since 2007.

The visitors, who began Day 4 with a 257-run lead in tow, would go on to post a second innings score of 245 in 81.5 overs. Rishabh Pant (57) was the only batter besides Cheteshwar Pujara (66) to notch a half-century for India.

England skipper Ben Stokes grabbed four wickets in his spell of 11.5 overs and his efforts saw his team earn a massive target of 378 runs to chase.

The English side got their run chase off to a confident start with openers Alex Lees and Zak Crawley stitching a 107-run opening stand. India captain Jasprit Bumrah brought the partnership to a halt as his in-swinger delivery hit the top of the off stump.

Bumrah would add another wicket as he dismissed Ollie Pope on the first delivery bowled after Tea. A back of a length delivery took the faintest of outside edges off the bat of Ollie Pope to go straight into the hands of Rishabh Pant.

Zak Crawley, who scored his fifty, would be a victim of a run-out in a Ravindra Jadeja over. After hitting the ball towards backward square leg, Crawley was late to react to a call for a single from non-striker Joe Root. In the end, Root crossed and Jadeja nicked the bails at the bowler’s end off a throw from Mohammed Shami.

Root and the immediate batter Jonny Bairstow registered half-centuries in the final session of Day 4, and their 150-run partnership helped England post 260/3 in 57 overs.

Both teams head into the final day of the England vs India 5th Test praying for a dramatic finish. While England are 119 runs away from completing their highest successful run chase in Test cricket, India need seven wickets to seal their first Test series win on English soil since 2007.

Play on Day 5 of the England vs India 5th Test will commence from 3 PM on Tuesday, July 5.

Day 5:

The England cricket team beat India by seven wickets in the fifth Test at Edgbaston.

The hosts, requiring 119 runs to win the tie, scored four runs in the first over bowled by Mohammed Siraj. But going forward, it was simply England enjoying themselves in the driver’s seat.

Joe Root (142*) and Jonny Bairstow (114*) reached their centuries in 67th and 75th over respectively, while seeing their 269-run stand for the fourth wicket guide England to their highest successful run chase in Test cricket.

Bairstow, for one, added another record to his name as he became the third Englishman since Graham Gooch (1990) and Andrew Strauss (2008) to hit two centuries in a Test against India.

By chasing the target of 378 against India, Ben Stokes’ England became the first team to chase a 250-plus score in four consecutive Tests and registered the second-highest chase at home since 2019.

The England-India rivalry in Tests saw two further records being broken as the hosts’ run-chase of 378 meant they pulled off the highest chase by any team against India in red-ball cricket.

For India, Rishabh Pant was the most successful batter with 203 runs while Mohammed Siraj finished with four wickets in this fixture.

The seven-wicket victory meant England levelled the fifth-match Test series 2-2.

The teams will reconvene on Thursday, July 7 for the white-ball leg of India’s tour of England. The first T20I will be played at the Rose Bowl with coverage starting at 10:30 PM IST.
