“Feeling sky high right now…always been hungry for a finish like this”: Tim David
Could we call this the moment when the baton passes? From the Polly era of stealing games from the mouths of oppositions, to this Tod-Fod Tim era of doing more of the same. Oh, it’s going to take us a while to recover from what just hit us at the Wankhede. At the end of it all, here he was, the man of the moment, Mr. 6, 6, 6 –Tim David – speaking to the media in the post-match press conference. Excerpts ..
On his power-packed finish
I have been hungry to have a finish like that, so it feels amazing. The team has been excited and the boys have been putting in big performances and I have been waiting for my chance. Pleased that I took it.
On how he’s making hitting sixes look so easy
Hitting sixes doesn’t come easily, and it doesn’t feel like it has come easy this year. When you’re getting that momentum, you just have to run with it. I have been putting in some hard work in the training over the last two weeks. I’m grateful for the support from the support staff. Obviously Polly (Kieron Pollard) is a big part of it. I’m just trying to relax and enjoy the game.
On whether he feels settled in the IPL now
I think one of the big feelings Last year was my first experience at the IPL, I was hungry to come and make a name for myself and establish myself in the team. That can be a fluid concept. When I now put on a shirt, I am trying to win games for Mumbai. Whether that’s communicating with the bowlers, I am just trying to do my best for the team. To have a nice individual performance today has been amazing.
On what the ceiling is on the asking-rate. At what point does he get worried?
When batting conditions are so good, like tonight here at the Wankhede, we believe we can chase down anything especially given the power we’ve got. We saw Surya coming out tonight and playing an amazing innings. We get accustomed to expecting that from him, but it was just something special. Hitting his first ball for six, some of his other shots as well. I try and not think too much about a fixed number. It doesn’t come off every day, so I am going to enjoy this one.
On whether he’d want to move up the batting order
Honestly, I am happy to do what the team needs. I know it sounds very clichéd but I don’t know where I would move up the order because we have Rohit, Ishan, Tilak, Surya. Green is smashing is around as well. I don’t want to move them out of position. It just means accepting that sometimes I am not going to have a massive role and the individual performances aren’t quite going to be there. But I am feeling pretty sky high right now.
On his national team ambitions after the pervious T20 World Cup
I am just working as hard as anyone on that kind of stuff. I am trying to develop to become a more rounded player. I can do the power-hitting, but I am trying to become versatile and find the best options. Looking to be as consistent as I can, being able to score when it’s not just amazing batting conditions and just doing what the team needs. We have shown that we are ready to be adaptable. It was a very different scenario chasing down at Delhi, we had to scrap hard. But tonight it was a different momentum and a different approach. To get those wins is really pleasing.
Thoughts about the last over bowling (three full tosses)
It was tough bowling. It was very sweaty, so gripping the ball was very tough. As a batter, you feel when you have the momentum. When the first ball went for six, it was very tough role for him (Jason Holder). I feel for him. It was tough for everyone. For me, personally, it was about staying level. I have been hungry to finish off a game like that and it plays on your mind at times, because you want to do it. So just trying to enjoy it when it comes.
A word on Yashasvi Jaiswal’s century
He played an amazing innings, congratulations to him. He is a Mumbai boy, on his home turf it must be special for him. Well done to him.
