From Rohit’s consistency to Pollard power: MI’s batters for 2022

By Mumbai Indians

As the Tata IPL 2022 nears, we take a brief look at the MI squad for the season.

First up are our batters and it is quite a formidable list. We retained Captain Hitman, Polly and Suryakumar Yadav and also brought back Ishan ‘Pocket Dynamo’ Kishan. Tim David has added some real steel to this line-up.

Let’s dive in.

Rohit Sharma

Ro is someone whose MI legacy need not be spelt out. With 4441 runs, he is the highest run-getter for MI in the Tata IPL, while his overall tally of 5611 runs places him third in the list for most runs in the Tata IPL.

Ro averages 31.27 for MI and bats at a strike-rate of 130.12 and this calm and collected approach at the top of the order acts as the perfect foil for the power-hitters to launch their attack.

He has also been at the helm for all five of our titles and will be the key cog as we chase a record-extending sixth Tata IPL trophy this time around.

Ishan Kishan

A batter whose stock has only risen in the past couple of years, Ishan Kishan will likely perform the dual role of being an opener and a wicket-keeper in this Tata IPL.

His numbers speak for themselves and while he has batted at a few positions in his MI career, his likely role of opening the batting this season could be especially dangerous.

Ishan Kishan has scored 555 runs as an opener and among batters who have opened in at least 10 innings in the Tata IPL, his average of 55.50 is the highest.

The Pocket Dynamo also bats at a strike-rate of 155.90 while opening, which is the fourth-best in the Tata IPL.

Suryakumar Yadav

Born and brought up in Mumbai, Suryakumar Yadav fits MI like a glove and has been a rock ever since he came back into the team in 2018.

With 1733 runs for MI, he has scored the fifth-highest number of runs for the squad. His strike-rate of 137.10 for MI is enough proof of how he perfectly balances the role of being a no. 3 batter and an attacking one, depending on the situation.

He is an especially effective enforcer in the middle overs (7-15) of a T20 innings. Since 2019, SKY has scored 726 runs between overs 7 and 15, the third-most in the Tata IPL and is a menace for spinners, who generally operate in this period.

SKY’s range of shots is also audacious - he can play behind square as effortlessly as he lifts one over covers, making him unpredictable and difficult to bowl to.

Kieron Pollard

From the top and middle order, we come to the finishers and Kieron Pollard can claim to be the master of that particular trade.

In 12 years and 178 games for MI, the Llord has played countless explosive knocks towards the end of an innings, which have always been invaluable to the team.

With 214 sixes, Polly has hit the most number of sixes for MI and his strike-rate of 149.77 is the second-best for MI - considering it is spread over 160 innings, that is an especially impressive record.

He also bowls useful overs from time-to-time, lending great balance to the team.

Tim David

The newest member of the MI power-hitting-brigade, Tim David has already expressed his interest in finishing games or innings for MI alongside Polly.

Tim David has a career strike-rate of 159.36 in all T20s and he has been in especially brutal form this season.

In other T20 leagues in 2021-22, among batters who have faced more than 200 balls, he has scored the second-most number of runs (496) at an incredible strike-rate of 179.71 (also the second-highest). Tim David is also only 35 runs away from completing 2000 career T20 runs.

That is quite a power-packed batting line-up we have there - covering all aspects from opening and middle-overs acceleration to death-hitting.

Who are you most excited to watch in action, Paltan?
