REVENGE COMPLETE, as SKY and Ishan seal yet-another 200+ chase
Chasing massive totals down has truly become an आमची habit. We hunted down 212 against RR three nights ago - the highest-ever run chase pulled off in Mumbai. And we did exactly the same in Mohali by chasing a bewildering 214 total posted by Punjab Kings.
They say the sky is the limit. But for us, we have the SKY and the pocket dynamo Ishan Kishan in our ranks and are bound by no means! In fact, we become the first team in the history of IPL to chase down 200+ scores in consecutive games. Oh, and lest you forget, we’ve done it tonight with an over to spare.
How did the massive chase begin?
Our batters went berserk right from the start in pursuit of 214. Ishan thumped Arshdeep Singh for three boundaries in the second over to make the intentions clear. His blistering 75 off 41 and Suryakumar Yadav’s 66 off 31 bamboozled the Kings, who just could not find a timely response to dismiss the pair.
"When you are chasing you need to keep the momentum. Whenever it was in the arc I was going to go for it.” our pocket dynamo, the Player of the Match, said after the contest. He and SKY put on a 116-run partnership in quick time.
Cameron Green (23 off 18) also contributed with the bat but after he was dismissed by Chahar on the final ball of the powerplay, Ishan and SKY never let the required run rate get out of reach and made sure they kept the platform ready for our finishers.
Tim and Tilak take off
Tim David (19 off 10) along with Tilak Varma (26 off 10) painted the run chase with finishing touches. The duo did not let SKY and Ishan falling in quick succession affect the run chase. In fact, Tilak got off the mark with 6, 4 and 6 against Arshdeep Singh in the 17th over to make sure the tables never turned.
What this win does for us
It takes us into the traffic jam of teams sitting at 10 points. Our net run rate of -0.373 means we are sixth on the points table but only two points behind leaders Gujarat Titans. Currently, four teams - RR, RCB, MI and PBKS - are locked in the mid-table jam on 10 points.
Chawla’s counter-attack
Piyush Chawla, didn’t quite have the 2023-version-of-Piyush-Chawla sort of a start tonight. Gabbar Dhawan took a liking to his bowling at first. But in his second over, after getting smacked off the first ball, he bamboozled him with a googly. #JustPCThings
Chawla’s quota of four overs gave away just 29 runs when all the other bowlers, including Jofra Archer, were going at a run rate of above 10. Apart from Dhawan, Chawla also outfoxed the dangerous Matthew Short with his slower wrong 'un in the 12th over.
Debut to remember for Akash Madhwal
Akash Madhwal became our sixth debutant this season. Though he wasn’t among the wickets and gave 37 runs in three overs, the figures actually don’t tell a full story. Madhwal’s yorkers and pace troubled the likes of Liam Livingstone and Jitesh Sharma, who were teeing off at almost every delivery and combined for a 119-run stand. Hitman trusted Madhwal by entrusting him the final over of the innings and the latter did not let his captain down by conceding just nine runs.
Brief Scores: Mumbai Indians - 216/4 (Ishan Kishan 75, Suryakumar Yadav 66, Nathan Ellis 2/34) beat Punjab Kings 214/3 (Liam Livingstone 82*, Jitesh Sharma 49*, Piyush Chawla 2/29) by six wickets.
