Jas-Pretty Perfect: The Day MI signed Bumrah in 2013

By Mumbai Indians

At the Mumbai Indians, there is always a powerful story when we say, with pride, “We saw him first.” And on February 3, 2013, the Blue and Gold took a chance on a “mystery kid” whose unconventional stuttering run-ups would grow to become an unstoppable force in the world of cricket. नाव? Jasprit Jasbirsingh Bumrah.

Let’s rewind the clock to the fateful year. A 19-year-old boy, with no paparazzi and no headline-worthy attention to his name, caught the bird's-eye view of John Wright. His awkward but stiff run-up that climaxed with terrifying fast yorkers made Wright understand one thing: 'Bloody hell, I've never seen that before.'

Was it a destined meeting? YES! The former India head coach-turned-MI scout visited Ahmedabad for a domestic T20 game between Gujarat and Mumbai for another player, but luck had its own way. He bore witness to Boom Boom’s attempt to bowl 12 yorkers in the death overs of the game, something he never came across.

Any particular bowling display that left Wright awestruck? In the 20th over of the GUJ vs MUM game in the 2013 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. Bumrah was bowling to Aditya Tare, and he crafted a vicious bouncer - off a good length - that flew over the Mumbai batter and then-Gujarat captain and keeper Parthiv Patel for four byes. That prompted Wright to ascertain Bumrah’s details.

What happened next? John Wright reached out to Parthiv (given their relationship as player and coach for Team India between 2002 and 2005), who endorsed Bumrah with the simple words: “That’s Boom.” This made it clear that the diamond in the rough was a gem too precious to ignore.

Plan of action? Wright immediately dialled the MI scouting team and said, “I've seen this young lad, and perhaps we should sign him.” And thus, the Mum-Bhais opened the doors to an era of bowling that would leave the world BOOM-struck for years to come.

Come April 4, 2013, the legend of Jasprit Bumrah OFFICIALLY kicked off in true Bollywood fashion

- Bowled to Virat Kohli in the fifth over of the RCB vs MI game

- Conceded three boundary fours in four deliveries

- Got him out LBW on the fifth delivery

- Finished the game with bowling figures of 3/32

And now, five titles, 219 IPL wickets, and a multitude of memories in आपलं Blue and Gold later, Jasprit 'BOOM BOOM' Bumrah is not just the heartbeat of the Mumbai Indians bowling unit, but an iconic legend whose story began with a single, fateful discovery of talent, resilience and hunger for success.
