BOOM BOOM turns 30! Let's relive his best spells for MI

By Mumbai Indians

The Speed Merchant turns 30. With his now-trademark small, stuttering strides, Jasprit Bumrah has officially stepped onto a new pitch - one where he continues to raise the bar of excellence with the ball and add a few more pages into the legend of Boom Boom.

Give him the ball, and you know a Bumrah delivery will not only give you wickets but also win you matches. From a prodigy to a phenomenon, there is no stopping his emphatic and meteoric adventure as a cricketer. To celebrate his special day, we visit the archive room to relive the top SIX bowling spells of the pace general in the Blue and Gold.

2013: You can call me, BOOM BOOM (IPL Match 2: 3/32 vs Royal Challengers Bangalore)

The 4th of April, 2013, is one of those special days in our Fa-MI-ly. Why? It was the day a relatively unknown 19-year-old unorthodox talent did the unthinkable: dismiss Virat Kohli in his first-ever over in the IPL. With a wide delivery that angled inwards to trap Kohli, Bumrah got the run machine as his debut scalp and later claimed the wickets of Mayank Agarwal (1; overs 6.1) and Karun Nair (0; overs 12.4) to finish with match figures of 3/32.

Jasprit Bumrah, rubbing shoulders with senior stars Mitchell Johnson, Munaf Patel and Jacob Oram in that game, put on a formal display of excellence to indicate a new star is in the making for the franchise and Indian cricket.

2018: Cometh the hour, Cometh the man (IPL Match 50: 3/15 vs Punjab Kings)

A must-win game and a much-needed impact from BOOM BOOM salvaged a massive sigh of relief in the Mumbai Indians dressing room. Punjab Kings were banking on KL Rahul to guide the team to a safe pathway to the playoffs. But, NO. Jasprit Bumrah didn’t let them. Entering his fourth over with match figures of 2/9 and having to defend 22 runs off the remaining 12 deliveries, our #93 had set a plan in motion.

18.1 overs: 1 wide

18.1 overs: 1

18.2 overs: 1

18.3 overs: WICKET (KL Rahul)

18.4 overs: 1

18.5 overs: 1

18.6 overs: 1

PBKS’ Rahul, on 94, was backed by the odds to score a century and also power his team to victory. But BOOM BOOM successfully deceived the opener with a slower ball that propelled KL Rahul to lift the shot towards Ben Cutting at long-off. This, in turn, was the game's shifting point, and in the end, it was the Mumbai Indians who had the last laugh.

2019: Jasprit GAMECHANGER Bumrah (IPL Final: 2/14 vs Chennai Super Kings)

We all know that our new bowling coach, Lasith Malinga, won the IPL 2019 final for us with THAT final over. But those who followed the match closely can testify to the magnitude of impact generated by BOOM BOOM’s spell in this crunch fixture.

After giving five runs in his first over, Jasprit Bumrah claimed a wicket and conceded just one run in his second. Stepping forward after Malinga leaked 20 runs, our #93 controlled the situation by conceding just four runs in his third over. His final over had a speck of drama, as he claimed a wicket and gave away just five runs.

2020: Full Circle ft. Virat Kohli (IPL Match 48: 3/14 vs Royal Challengers Bangalore)

2013 - Virat Kohli is Jasprit Bumrah’s maiden IPL wicket

2020 - Virat Kohli is Jasprit Bumrah’s 100th IPL wicket

This coincidence couldn’t have been any more poetic, right Paltan?

Jasprit took charge of Mumbai Indians’ bowling and removed the RCB skipper with a short ball. The delivery took an edge off Kohli’s bat and went towards Saurabh Tiwary at mid-wicket.

Next, it was yet another Bumrah special. Bowling the 17th over, #93 toyed with the RCB batters and pocketed the scalps of Shivam Dube (2, 16.3 overs) and Devdutt Padikkal (74, 16.5 overs) in a double-wicket maiden over. This impeccable display paved the way for MI to reduce Bangalore to a score of 164/6 in the first innings. BOOM BOOM would finish the game as the most economical bowler, having leaked just 3.50 per over.

2020: ‘B’ and ‘R’ in Bumrah stand for breaking records! (IPL Qualifier 1: 4/14 vs Delhi Capitals)

One step, two steps, three steps, BOOM! Jasprit Bumrah went on a rampage against Delhi Capitals in IPL 2020 Qualifier 1 with his four-wicket haul.

Delhi were given a target of 201 to chase, but MI’s Trent Boult derailed their journey with double strikes in the first over. BOOM BOOM would take over the baton and prove he is a class apart with two wickets in the powerplay and two at the start of the death-overs phase. The best wicket of them all? Quick length ball to uproot Marcus Stoinis' middle stump and signal off the final stages of DC’s crumbling run chase.

2022: Mode - Annihilation (IPL Match 56: 5/10 vs Kolkata Knight Riders)

While Mumbai Indians were humbled in this tie, Jasprit Bumrah exhibited one of the best bowling displays in the Indian Premier League - claiming a fifer for just 10 runs.

BOOM BOOM’s emphatic run began in the middle overs, with the dismissals of Andre Russell (9, 14.2 overs) and Nitish Rana (43, 14.5 overs). His third over was one for the ages, as he registered a triple-wicket maiden (W, 0, W, W, 0, 0) in the 18th over.
