Mumbai Indians tag records along with History

By Mumbai Indians

Five IPL finals, four titles. That’s what champions are made of. Mumbai Indians became the first team in IPL history to get their name printed four times on the trophy when they defeated CSK on the 12th of May, 2019. They have now played CSK in 4 out of their 5 finals winning 3 of them. MS Dhoni has been part of every final against them. Let’s dive in the other notable landmarks MI managed to bag.

100 IPL wins. The Blue and Gold got there before everyone else beating the then three-time fellow IPL winners at the Wankhede. The Dhoni-led side became just the second team to register 100 wins later in the season.

Rohit Sharma added to his captaincy CV when he wore the armband for the 100th time in MI colours. That game against the Rajasthan Royals also witnessed Mumbai Indians become the first team to play 200 T20 games. England’s Somerset was second at 199 games.

Rohit didn’t stop there. He got another daddy hundred to his name. For a change, this was sans the bat. The Hitman who joined MI in 2011, put on the jersey for the 150th time. He, though, is still two places behind the most capped MI player - Kieron Pollard. The Trinidadian overtook Harbhajan Singh in the game against SRH when he stepped onto the field for the 137th time in the Indian Premier League. The might all-rounder has also been part of every Mumbai Indians final from 2010.

Talking about the game against SRH, there is only one name that pops up. Alzarri Joseph. How about this for a script - Come in as a replacement for Adam Milne, get a game because Malinga was unavailable, make your debut and then break a 12-year long record in the IPL. It was just meant to be. The young prodigy, Alzarri Joseph tore apart the Sunrisers and registered the best IPL figures ever. 3.4-1-12-6. How many years for this to be broken?

The Rohit Sharma-led side bats deep and that was clearly visible. With 2661 runs in 16 matches, the 2019 champions scored the most runs compared to all other sides. Delhi Capitals with 2519 runs took the second position. MI’s debutant Quinton de Kock was a major contributor to those numbers having scored 529 runs himself. He also affected 19 dismissals behind the wicket and in doing so he became the first ‘keeper in the history of the Indian Premier League to score 500+ runs and take 15+ dismissals in a single season.

Jasprit Bumrah, Lasith Malinga, Jason Behrendorff, Mitchell McClenaghan, Alzarri Joseph, Hardik Pandya and the list goes on. Mumbai Indians had one of the most lethal pace attacks which played a pivotal part in winning the title. Rohit Sharma always had faith that his bowlers could defend any total. The Mumbai pacers scalped 64 wickets amongst themselves, just 4 behind the Delhi Capitals seamers. They bowled a combined of 495 dot balls which is the most by any side. Their dot ball percentage of 40.31 also ranks right up there. Mumbai Indians go-to-man Jasprit Bumrah tops the MI chart with 19 wickets.

Over the years Mumbai Indians have always supplied homegrown talent to the international market. Jasprit Bumrah and Hardik Pandya are the most relatable of them. This year too Mumbai Indians had 10 new players who represented them for the first time. Some who have played the IPL before while it was the first time for the rest. Yuvraj Singh, Anukul Roy, Barinder Sran, Jason Behrendorff, Jayant Yadav, Quinton de Kock, Rahul Chahar, Rasikh Salam, Siddhesh Lad, and Alzarri Joseph became part of a title-winning side in their debut season with MI.

Rasikh Salam became just the second player from the state of Jammu and Kashmir to play in the IPL. At 17 years, Rasikh also became Mumbai Indians’ youngest debutant when he was handed the cap by Zaheer Khan.

2013, 2015, 2017, and 2019. MI continue living the odd-year glory. At this rate, no other team would have more titles than the Mumbai Indians.
