Our Cameron Green, Australia's missing puzzle piece, is fit, AND BACK

By Mumbai Indians

Confirmation complete! Cameron Green’s 2023 calendar begins. When? March 1. Where? Indore. Which game? Australia vs India third Test.

Courageous. Determined. Dangerous. The young all-rounder was all of it as he battled a finger injury to score a fifty against South Africa on Boxing Day 2022 at the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground.

Given the unpredictability of cricket, Cameron Green opted for a ‘better safe than sorry’ approach to sit out the second game and recharge himself. “I was so, so close last game, but I think probably having an extra week has helped a lot!”

The saying, “there is only a finger's difference between a wise man and a fool”, can be applied here. Yes, his finger needed time to heal as he provides the right balance for Australia. But, if he were rushed into the second Test, it would have poured water on his preparations and efforts to feature in the series.

“I’m 100 per cent ready to go!” - Green’s statement ahead of the third game in the Border Gavaskar Trophy is a welcome relief for Australia and us at Mumbai Indians. Why? His talent speaks for itself. Hopefully it also helps spice up the on-field action!

The Australian ‘Andrew Flintoff’

At six foot six inches, Cameron Green is the dream all-rounder GIANT you need. Like every other budding cricketer, the Western Australian boy had some hype around him - they called him Andrew Flintoff. His early displays in the Sheffield Shield was enough proof.

The Cameron Green Show - a paid preview ;)

An 18-year-old with a five-wicket haul on his Sheffield Shield debut in 2017, Cameron Green announced himself as a player the future Australian cricket team could turn to.

A couple of stress injuries came his way, but the fire in his belly wasn't to be quelled. This flame took its time to grow and was unleashed in 2019, with unbeaten scores of 87 and 121 while batting at no.8 and no. 9 against Queensland.

Despite making his competitive Test debut for Australia in 2020, Green’s penchant for first-class cricket records continued. His maiden double hundred (251 vs Queensland, 2020-21 Sheffield Shield) went down as the seventh-highest Shield score by a 21-year-old (or younger).

Checked: Match-winning quality

“The main thing to do is relax and let your talent do the work” - this quote reflects how Cameron Green, a prodigious talent, soaked in the pressure thrown at him and delivered when it mattered the most in Test cricket. A crucial 79 at number six injected confidence into an Australian batting line-up in the first innings of their 2022 Lahore Test against Pakistan, which the Aussies would eventually win.

However, the same year, his worth as a batting all-rounder took a major leap. His 109-ball 77 rubber stamped an incredible turnaround for Australia against Sri Lanka at Galle. Half-century stands with Usman Khawaja and Alex Carey, bundled with six boundaries in his inspirational knock, eventually led to a 10-wicket victory for the Baggy Greens.

A man made for red-ball cricket

Cameron Green announced himself as a promising novice with first-class cricket in 2017. Believe it or not, the young Western Australian all-rounder is bound to be a long-term mainstay in the Test team, as the saying goes - “It's our roots that really give us our identity.”

The confidence to say this? Green’s record of 3,050 runs and 63 wickets in 48 first-class matches is the answer.

The fresh mindset, balance factor, and sheer determination that our record-signing Cameron Green brings to the fold are what Australia desperately need going into the third India vs Australia Test at Indore.

When they say that ‘modern problems require modern solutions’, the Aussies will look up to 23-year-old Green’s batting ethic to exploit the pitch conditions on offer.

Paltan, prepare yourselves to witness and cheer Cameron Green for the first time in action on the Indian shores. Let's hope he does really well, too well in fact, but India continue their winning juggernaut ;)
