Indian vice-captain Rohit Sharma has been nominated by BCCI for the prestigious Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna award for 2020, the highest sporting honour in the country. He also received the esteemed Arjuna Award back in 2015.

In a video posted by the BCCI, Rohit expressed his gratitude to all well-wishers.

"Extremely honoured and humbled to be nominated by the BCCI for the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna award, which is the highest sporting honour in India. I am grateful to BCCI, to all my teammates, support staff, fans of the game and my family for sticking by me. Thank you very much”

Rohit Sharma has set new benchmarks

BCCI President Sourav Ganguly heaped praise on the Mumbai Indians skipper. He deemed Rohit worthy enough with regards to his performances with the bat over the recent past.

"Rohit Sharma has set new benchmarks as a batsman and achieved scores people thought were not possible in the shorter formats of the game. We feel he is worthy of getting the prestigious Khel Ratna award for his commitment, conduct, consistency and his leadership skills."

Rohit may become the 4th cricketer to win the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award

Rohit Sharma had a tremendous 2019 World Cup where he ended up as the highest run-scorer. An aggregate of 648 runs with five tons. He was also named the ICC ODI Cricketer of the Year for his heroics with the bat.

Later in the year, he went on to relinquish himself as a prominent opener in the Test side with three centuries including a double hundred against South Africa.

The Hitman, as he's popularly known, also holds the record for most sixes by an Indian batsman across all formats. He is the only batsman to score three double centuries in the 50-over format and four hundreds in T20Is.

Rohit may become the fourth cricketer to be a recipient of the prestigious award after Sachin Tendulkar (1997-98), MS Dhoni (2007) and Virat Kohli (2018).
