Super Supla SKY storm blows RCB away…Hello, TOP FOUR
We started the day placed eighth in the points table. A special storm blew over at the Wankhede and we finished the night at third. RCB really stood no chance.
What an innings, what a knock, what a masterclass! Chasing down 200 seemed like a cakewalk tonight and to think we did it with 21 balls and six wickets to spare!
And not to forget Nehal Wadhera. After a fighting 50 in a losing cause against CSK in our last outing, the youngster played the supporting role like a veteran tonight and perhaps, rightfully, hit the winning runs to bring up another half-century.
“I’m happy with my half-century but more importantly we won. Surya bhai kept guiding me from the other end and he kept on saying we could finish off the game early,” Nehal said after the match.
So, how did the sensational chase pan out?
Ishan puts pedal to the metal
Ishan Kishan made his intent clear right from the get go and took RCB’s opening bowlers, Siraj and Hazlewood, to the cleaners. Hasaranga, too, yielded 10 from his first three balls but his next three saw both Ishan and Rohit walk back.
Lord SKY takes over
The double blow, though, hardly derailed our chase. SKY and Nehal Wadhera almost made it look too easy out in the middle and kept the scoreboard ticking without much hassle. Some sensible batting, some big hits down the wicket, and we seemed to be cruising through. After reaching his 50 in 26 balls, SKY, simply, went berserk. Dealing almost exclusively in 6s and 4s, he raced to 83 - his highest IPL score - in the next eight balls.
Nothing to 'dent' the young Nehal
Talk about making a statement! A six so flat and hit so hard off the bat of Wadhera smashed straight into the handle of the sponsors' car parked by the boundary. He matched Surya stroke for stroke, and in the end, notched up a consecutive fifty with a massive smash down the ground, thereby sealing the game as well.
Earlier in the day… Jason, Jason, Faf-Max, Jason, 199
After Rohit won the toss and elected to bowl, Jason Behrendorff gave us the early edge. Correction, make that two. The first, from Virat Kohli, carried straight to Ishan Kishan while the second from Anuj Rawat looped up for Green. Quickfire half-centuries from Maxwell and Faf, however, helped RCB recover. Maxwell, in particular, went after Chris Jordan, who was making his debut in MI colours. The Englishman got taken for 31 runs in his first two overs. The ever-reliable Piyush Chawla, uncharacteristically, went wicketless on the night and gave away 41 from his four.
It was Behrendorff, again, who broke the 127-run partnership and brought us back into the contest. Our bowlers did well to stem the run rate in the final eight overs but RCB, powered by a late flurry from Dinesh Karthik, eventually finished with 199/6.
Two points in the bag, in the top four, three matches to go and two of them at home. We are in control now.
Brief Scores: Royal Challengers Bangalore 199/6 (Glenn Maxwell 68, Faf du Plessis 65, Jason Behrendorff 3/36) lost to Mumbai Indians - 200/4 (Suryakumar Yadav 83, Nehal Wadhera 52*, Vijaykumar Vyshak 2/37) by si
