Suryakumar: We are focused on what we do best

By Mumbai Indians

Mumbai Indians will be aiming to secure back-to-back wins against Sunrisers Hyderabad at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium on Saturday. MI beat defending champions Chennai Super Kings in their last game and will be confident heading into the clash against SRH. Hyderabad have been in good form themselves and have won their last three matches in convincing fashion.

However, Suryakumar Yadav, who made 59 and was our top-scorer against CSK, insisted that the boys are focusing on our strengths and aren’t very perturbed by the opposition. “We have been following their (SRH) game well. We have some plans for them as well. But we are focusing on what we do best. The mood in the camp is very good. We just won our home game. We are focusing on our strong points, what we can do good and we will take it from there,” Suryakumar told reporters at the pre-match press conference.

The stylish right-hander then revealed that despite batting at three this year, he doesn’t feel much of a change in terms of his responsibility. “I have always enjoyed batting anywhere, because I have kept myself flexible. As you know when I was with another franchise I have batted at all positions. It is a different role, but at number three, it is as good as opening. I don’t see it differently. I look at it like I have good responsibility on my shoulders, like a grinding innings and giving a good platform for the lower order to go out there and have good firepower. It is an exciting, new role for me, but I think it is similar (to last year),” Suryakumar said.

When asked how important the win against CSK was, Suryakumar remarked: “It was important because they had won all their games and were on top of the table. Winning against one of the best sides and I think the brand of cricket that MI are known to play is what we showed on the field (against CSK). What I saw was that everyone on the field wanted to win. The winning attitude was there, let’s carry that and look forward to the next game.”

Looking ahead, he also spoke about how the pitch may play despite it being known for its assistance for spinners. “Well, in the last three games it didn’t look like it helped the spinners,” Suryakumar quipped. “It was a proper wicket to bat on. I haven’t looked at it till now but it has always helped the spinners (in the past). We have a few plans in mind going into the game and we will look at the wicket and see what can be done.”
