UPWvMI report: Amelia, Amanjot nearly pull off the impossible! Nearly… :(

By Vineet Anantharaman

The scorecard might tell you a 22-run defeat, but this was anything but one-sided. Until the last over, with Amelia Kerr and Amanjot Kaur going on an onslaught, Mumbai Indians were firmly in the game despite the asking rate being over 15-an-over. It wasn’t to be, but we go down fighting..

The Kerr-Kaur show

MI were 69/5 in 11 overs, staring down the barrel when Amanjot Kaur joined Amelia Kerr out in the middle. Harmanpreet Kaur had just fallen. Nicola Carey an over earlier. Nat Sciver-Brunt a couple of overs before that. The 188-run target looked really far. But we weren’t going down without a fight.

What started as a fight ended up being a full blown assault. The boundaries kept coming. Both of them kept smacking it at a strike-rate of over 200.

Over #12: 9 runs | 1 four

Over #13: 11 runs | 1 four | 1 six

Over #14: 8 runs | 1 four

91 runs were needed off 36 balls. They upped the gear.

Over #15: 14 runs | 3 fours

Over #16: 14 runs | 2 sixes

Over #17: 12 runs | 2 fours

Over #18: 14 runs | 1 four | 1 six

And suddenly, the chase was on. The rhythm was with us. DY Patil was buzzing. But sadly, Shikha Pandey got the better of Amanjot in the 19th over, and that was that. But this 83-run stand showed exactly what the MI Spirit was all about.

Mumbai-Kerr does Mumbai-Kerr things

It’s typical with Amelia. When she shines in one department, stay assured of her shining in the other as well. As she skittled out the UP Warriorz’s lower order with a three-fer, and pulled things back for MI from what looked like a certain 200+ run chase, you could sense a batting special was loading up as well.

Navi Mumbai, you were wonderful. Some high, some near misses, some major lessons, some stars unearthed, you’ve seen it all. Paltan, through these last two weeks, your support is what has been the wind beneath our wings. As we get into MODE RUTHLESS in the next leg in Vadodara, thank you!
