India’s two-wicket victory against West Indies at the Queen's Park Oval meant they have now taken an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series.

Axar Patel’s unbeaten knock of 64 runs in 35 balls helped the visitors comfortably chase a target of 312 in 49.4 overs. Axar’s exploits meant Shai Hope’s landmark century (115 runs in 135 balls) went in vain.

West Indies captain Nicholas Pooran won the toss and opted to bat first. Both teams opted to make a single change to their playing XI, with Avesh Khan earning his ODI debut at the behest of Prasidh Krishna for India. Hosts West Indies, meanwhile, called up Hayden Walsh in place of Gudakesh Motie.

The Men in Maroon registered a powerplay score of 71-1, with Kyle Mayers dismissed for 39. The opening pairing of Mayers and Shai Hope propelled the hosts to 50 in 7.1 overs, and Hope’s batting carried the Calypso Kings past 100 in 16.2 overs.

After losing the wickets of Shamarh Brooks (35) and Brandon King (0), West Indies banked on the 117-run stand between Shai Hope and Nicholas Pooran for the fourth wicket to reach closer to 250 in the 44th over.

Playing in his 100th ODI, Hope reached his century in 124 deliveries and saw the West Indies reach 300 until his dismissal by India’s Shardul Thakur in the 49th over.

West Indies completed their innings at 311/6 in 50 overs and gave India a target of 312 to chase. Shardul finished the first innings as India’s top bowler, grabbing three wickets for 54 runs.

India got off to a rocky start as Windies’ Romario Shepherd and Kyle Mayers reduced the visitors to 79/3 in 17.2 overs.

Shreyas Iyer, coming in at number four, revitalized the batting order as he established a 99-run partnership for the fourth wicket with Sanju Samson.

After Iyer’s dismissal (71-ball 63), Samson (54 runs in 51 balls) carried the baton forward as he took India past 200 alongside Deepak Hooda.

Samson departure, a run out, in the 39th over would see the arrival of Axar Patel at the crease.

Patel, with 202 runs in 21 ODI innings, forged a match-defining 51-run stand with Deepak Hooda to get India from needing 105 runs in 11 overs to the target being 56 required in the final six overs.

Subsequent 24-run partnerships with Shardul Thakur (3) and Avesh Khan (10) saw Axar Patel not only get India within sights of victory, but the all-rounder also hit his maiden ODI half-century in 27 balls.

India, needing eight runs in the final over and two wickets in hand, managed just two runs in the first deliveries. With the equation now reading as six runs required in three balls, Axar smashed home a maximum off Kyle Mayers’ fourth delivery to see off a two-wicket victory for the visitors.

The fixture proved to be one of the closest contests in recent times for the Men in Blue in ODIs, as they scored 100 runs between overs 41-50. Going by the numbers, it is fourth on the list for most runs chased successfully in the last 10 overs (41-50) in Men's ODIs since 2001.

India not only took an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series but also registered a record 12th successive bilateral ODI series win over West Indies.

The teams will reconvene for the third and final ODI on Wednesday, July 27.
