Alzarri Joseph: I could not have asked for a better start

By Mumbai Indians

Alzarri Joseph made a stunning Indian Premier League (IPL) debut with Mumbai Indians at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad on Saturday. The youngster from West Indies blew away Sunrisers Hyderabad’s batsmen to give MI a 40-run victory. He ended the night with figures of 6 for 12, which happens to be the best performance by any bowler in IPL history.

After the game, Joseph spoke to media in the post-match press conference and shared his thoughts on what was the best debut as well as bowling performance in IPL history. “Unbelievable, it is a great start, I do not think I could have asked for anything better, so I’ll really cherish this moment. I just wanted to go out and put all my effort in for this team. It was my first game and I just wanted to get out in the park and get bowling and get through it,” Joseph said.

The Antiguan’s six wickets included that of the in-form David Warner, who has been in stunning form for SRH this season. However, it wasn’t the Australian’s wicket that gave Joseph the most satisfaction. “My last wicket (gave me the most satisfaction) because that gave us the win. My aim is to do my best to win games for my team, not really for personal performances. I just want to give my whole effort for the team,” Joseph opined.

The 22-year-old also admitted that the pitch wasn’t the easiest of surfaces for batsmen to play their natural game. “The score does not really matter. I just go out and put my best foot forward. You get the information from the pitch from the first ball, so you will know what variations you will have to use. So, that is basically it. The pitch was not the easiest to play on, 136 from 120 balls, as long as we got a few early wickets, we knew we were in it,” he said.

When asked if he spoke with any other Caribbean stars before travelling to India for the world’s grandest T20 extravaganza, Jospeh added: “No actually (I didn’t), I just got the call and I was so excited to come. I just did all I had to do to get here. I did not really speak to anyone, I just did what I had to do to get here.”
