Jasprit Bumrah made inroads into India’s 10-wicket victory over England in the first ODI at The Oval with a career-best haul of 6/19.
This performance not only saw the 28-year-old Ahmedabad-born pacer briefly take over the top spot on the ICC ODI bowler rankings, but also cement his worth as a bowling superstar across formats.
Bumrah’s six-wicket haul will be remembered for years, as he became the first-ever Indian pace bowler to scalp six wickets in an ODI in England. Furthermore, his performance saw him register the third-best bowling spell for India in men's ODIs.
Not only did Jasprit Bumrah script the best bowling figures, but he joined Ashish Nehra, Sreesanth, and Kuldeep Yadav as the only Indian bowlers to bag six wickets in ODI innings against England.
The pitch conditions at The Oval certainly had a significant role in Jasprit Bumrah’s historical performance with the ball.
“When there's swing and seam movement, it is very exciting in white-ball cricket to get that opportunity because you have to be defensive with the kind of pitches we usually get,” Bumrah said at the post-match presentation.
"When I bowled the first ball, I found some swing and we tried to exploit that. When it doesn't swing, I have to pull my lengths back. When the ball is doing something, you don't have to try a lot. When the wicket is flat, your accuracy is tested. It is a good place to be when the ball is swinging,” he added.
In the second ODI, Bumrah bagged two wickets for 49 runs as India fell to a 100-run defeat at the Lord’s Stadium.
Jasprit Bumrah is one of India’s stalwart bowlers in One Day cricket, with 121 wickets in 72 matches at an economy rate of 4.63. His favourite opponents are Australia and Sri Lanka, against whom he has registered 22 wickets each. However, he has taken fewer games to register the haul against the Lankan Lions.
As much as he is a menace for batters in 50-overs cricket, Bumrah is India’s third-best bowler in T20 Internationals, with 69 wickets in 58 games.
Like in ODIs, the 28-year-old has proved himself to be a tormentor for Australia in 20-overs cricket with 15 scalps in 11 outings. His most successful year in T20I cricket was his debut year in 2016.
Bumrah grabbed 28 wickets in 21 games in 2016, with a standout performance against Australia on debut (3/23). However, his best outing with the ball came in Zimbabwe, where he registered a three-wicket haul and conceded just 11 runs that year.
As part of the Mumbai Indians franchise in the Tata IPL, Jasprit Bumrah is among the top wicket-takers in the competition, with 145 wickets in 120 games.
His finest spell with the ball came in Indian Premier League 2022, where he grabbed five wickets for just 10 runs against Kolkata Knight Riders.
The hard-hitting trio of Andre Russell, Nitish Rana and Sunil Narine were part of his dismissal party, and his figures (5/10) went down as the best haul by any bowler against KKR.
Jasprit has enjoyed bowling for India in Test cricket, having amassed 128 wickets in 30 games at an economy rate of 2.69. His best performance with the red ball came against West Indies in 2019.
His six wickets for 27 runs helped India set a 257-run victory at Kingston in motion. Regarding match figures, Bumrah’s 9/86 inspired India to a 137-run win in the 2018 Melbourne Tes against Australia.
If one has to ask who is Jasprit Bumrah’s bunny in Test cricket, it is England. In 10 matches, the pacer has 41 scalps at an economy of 2.73.
The India pacer currently leads the bowling charts in the 2021-23 ICC World Test Championship with 45 wickets in 10 matches.
Jasprit Bumrah has represented India in 160 matches across all formats, with 318 wickets to his name.
Digging into his bowling attributes, we find that Bumrah has excelled mostly with full length deliveries. In ODI cricket matches, the pacer has registered 66.12 per cent of wickets by full length, 19.01 per cent by good length, and 13.22 per cent by yorkers.
In Tests, 53.91 per cent of Bumrah’s wickets have been full length deliveries, while he has aggregated 33.59 per cent of his scalps by good length and 4.69 per cent wickets by yorker balls.
The T20I format has seen the 28-year-old bag 57.97 per cent wickets by full length balls, 20.29 per cent wickets by good length deliveries and 20.29 per cent wickets by yorker-length balls. It is worth noting that Bumrah has excelled with yorker balls predominantly in 20-overs cricket.
From critics questioning his unorthodox bowling action to becoming one of India’s leading bowlers across all formats, Jasprit Bumrah continues to push forward with his mantra of ‘Keep evolving as a bowler’ and ‘Enjoy the game, ignore the criticism and applause’.
