Boom’s fifer, Sams’ early damage: Revisiting the best spells of the season

During the course of our 14 league matches in Tata IPL 2022, we witnessed some marvellous spells by our bowlers - some came in the powerplay, some in the death and a couple in the middle overs.

Let’s recap some of these unplayable spells.

Daniel Sams - 4/30 vs CSK, DY Patil Stadium, April 21st

A bowler could not ask for a better start than a wicket off the first ball of an innings to set his rhythm and that is exactly what Dan Sams did against CSK.

He bowled wide to tempt Ruturaj Gaikwad into a cut, the batter obliged and the result was a simple catch to Tilak Varma at backward point. Sams wreaked havoc on the CSK batting line-up from there on.

In his second over, he went short to Mitchell Santner, who was beaten by the extra bounce and pace and holed out. Sams then returned in the 13th over, got one to angle in to the in-form Shivam Dube and found his edge, which was taken by a stunning Ishan dive.

In the game’s 15th over, Sams went with a dipping full toss to get Ambati Rayudu to go for the big one and he found Polly at long-off.

Sams had struck in every over he bowled on the night and it was the start of his turnaround in form during the campaign.

M Ashwin - 2/29 vs GT, Brabourne Stadium, May 6th

You know it is a special spell when a double-strike removes the opponents’ set openers in the same over. M Ashwin turned the game around with that over against GT.

After giving four runs in his first over, Ash was hit for 13 in his second and  for 11 in his third. His final over of the night proved to be the magical one.

Coming in the 13th over with GT cruising, both Wriddhiman Saha and Shubman Gill had hit half-centuries and they needed 72 runs in the final eight overs.

Gill was the first to fall to Ash’s guile. He flighted it up, Gill charged down and the ball turned away just slightly to deceive Gill, who could not time the ball and spooned a catch to Polly at long-on.

Five balls later, Saha’s premeditated slog-sweep did not pay off. Ash bowled it flatter and a bit quicker than normal, the other GT opener only got a top-edge which carried to Dan Sams at deep backward square.

Ash had provided not one, but two, crucial breakthroughs and removed GT’s set batters to derail their chase.

Jasprit Bumrah - 5/10 vs KKR, DY Patil Stadium, May 9th

A first fifer in T20 cricket, a triple-wicket maiden and 18 dot balls in four overs - need we say any more about this magical spell?

Boom was on fire that night against KKR. After conceding a boundary in his very first ball, he did not allow the batters an inch.

Ro held him back to bowl to Andre Russell and Boom responded by picking both Russell and Nitish Rana in the same over.

In the 18th, Boom then prised out Sheldon Jackson, Pat Cummins and Sunil Narine without conceding a run to complete a maiden five-for and only gave away one run in his and the innings’ final over.

It was undoubtedly one of the greatest T20 spells of all time.

Daniel Sams - 3/16 vs CSK, Wankhede Stadium, May 12th

Dan Sams seemed to be at his best against CSK as was evidenced by his top-class new ball bowling at the Wankhede.

Sams struck in the first over yet again and this time, it was twice. Off just the second ball, he got one to come in to Devon Conway, hit him on the pads to catch him in front of the wicket.

Three balls later, he went short to Moeen Ali, who was surprised by the bouncer and could only offer a simple catch to Hrithik at short mid-wicket.

In his third over, Sams bowled down the leg-side to get Ruturaj Gaikwad’s edge and dismissed him for a second time in as many games.

Sams had figures of 3/14 in the powerplay, among the best in MI history, and eventually finished with 3/16 to leave CSK rattled.

Ramandeep Singh - 3/20 vs SRH, Wankhede Stadium, May 17th

Three wickets in three overs after coming on to bowl only in the ninth over - Ramandeep Singh could not have asked for a better outing at the Wankhede.

With SRH cruising through a 50-run stand between Priyam Garg and Rahul Tripathi, Ro called on Ramandeep to bowl the ninth over and he responded immediately.

In the fifth ball, Ramandeep got one to grip the surface, which deceived Garg and the batter offered a low return catch, which Ramandeep did well to grab.

In the 18th over, Ramandeep bowled another slower one and the in-form Tripathi, looking to go big, could not get any timing on it and the catch was taken by Tilak in the deep.

In the same over, Ramandeep went full and slow to not offer Aiden Markram any room or pace to work with. The result was another catch in the deep and Ramandeep had successfully nullified SRH’s threat in the death overs.

He only bowled three overs on the night but some smart bowling and excellent fielding ensured the spell would stay on in memory.

With the bowlers, both experienced and young, building partnerships and taking charge, it is a good sign for the future.
