India equal record with 12th T20I win on the trot to complete series whitewash

By Mumbai Indians

India won their 12th-consecutive T20I match to equal the longest win streak in men’s T20Is and complete a 3-0 series win over Sri Lanka.

It was also India’s 40th T20I win at home, a record for a men’s team, and their 17th win overall against Sri Lanka, which is a record for most wins against a single opponent in men’s T20Is.

Lankan skipper Dasun Shanaka won the toss and chose to bat as Sri Lanka brought in Jeffrey Vandersay and Janith Liyanage for Kamil Mishara and Praveen Jayawickrama.

Indian captain Rohit Sharma played his 125th T20I for India - becoming the most capped player in the history of men’s T20Is.

Ishan Kishan was forced to sit out after he was hit by a bouncer in the second T20I while Jasprit Bumrah, Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Yuzvendra Chahal were all rested. Mohammad Siraj, Avesh Khan, Ravi Bishnoi and Kuldeep Yadav were brought into the playing XI.

Here’s how India went about equalling the record for most consecutive T20I victories.

Shanaka pyrotechnics carry Sri Lanka

Mohammad Siraj struck in the first over of the match to dismiss Danushka Gunathilaka while Avesh Khan picked up his first international wicket after having Pathum Nissanka caught at extra cover before he also got rid of Charith Asalanka.

Siraj and Avesh’s fiery pace and tight lines reduced Sri Lanka to 18/3 in the powerplay overs and the Lankans struggled to get any sort of rhythm going, scoring only 90 in 16 overs. That’s when Dasun Shanaka stepped up.

The skipper, who was batting on 25 then, went on to hit 49 runs in the last four overs, ending unbeaten on 74 off 38 balls with nine fours and two sixes. It took Sri Lanka’s total to 146/5.

Shreyas continues rich vein of form

Sanju Samson opened the innings with the Hitman but the partnership was short-lived as Ro was dismissed for 5 by Dushmantha Chameera.

Shreyas Iyer walked in at no. 3 and looked comfortable from the get-go, hitting four boundaries in his first 11 balls. Samson soon joined the party with three fours but fell for 18.

Deepak Hooda, batting for the first time in T20Is, hit some lovely shots for his 21 before being undone by a searing yorker from Lahiru Kumara. Venkatesh Iyer was also dismissed soon after, just after Shreyas brought up his 50 with a six off Jeffrey Vandersay.

India romp to victory

Ravindra Jadeja joined Shreyas at the crease and for the second night in a row, the duo took India home to a comfortable victory.

With the asking rate below six, Shreyas and Jadeja knocked the ball around before they hit a flurry of late boundaries to share a 45-run partnership and win with 20 balls to spare.

The focus will now shift to the two-Test series against the same opponents, with the first Test to begin at Mohali on March 4th.
