Mahela: Boult is a world-class bowler
Head coach Mahela Jayawardene was quite impressed with how the transfer window went for the Mumbai Indians. The first trade was conducted with Delhi Capitals where MI let go of Mayank Markande but acquired an explosive all-rounder in Sherfane Rutherford.
"Obviously we let go of Mayank (Markande) because we felt that he could get some game time in Delhi. And then there was the opportunity of getting Sherfane Rutherford who we feel is an exciting talent for us," he said in an interview to Times Of India.
Jason Behrendorff recently underwent back surgery. With him being out of action for long, Jayawardene asserted that MI needed to amp up their fast bowling resources.
"The biggest concern we had was with Jason Behrendorff having the operation. We needed to replace him, he was fantastic for us last year."
Getting in Trent Boult was obviously huge for the defending champions. The same was highlighted by the head coach who looked forward to watching him bowling in tandem with Jasprit Bumrah.
"When the opportunity came with Delhi releasing Trent Boult, we felt he is a world-class bowler, very lethal in our conditions and especially to partner Bumrah -- that will be a lethal partnership.”
It was a homecoming for Dhawal Kulkarni who was a part of the MI squad for six seasons spanning from 2008 to 2013. Mahela felt that his inclusion will be beneficial for the team.
"Dhawal Kulkarni as well and experienced bowler we needed in the squad. He is a local Mumbai boy so we had no hesitation in signing him up. So we have strengthened a few areas that were important for us and now looking forward to the auction."
The IPL Auction is scheduled to take place on the 19th of December at Kolkata.
