MI Junior Cricket Tournament Day 8: All-round Kanukale stars in Cardinal’s close win

By Mumbai Indians

Cardinal Gracias High School, Bandra kept their nerves to eke out a thrilling two-wicket win over Gokuldham High School, Goregaon in an Under-14 Boys match of the Mumbai Indians Junior Cricket Tournament at Cross Maidan on Wednesday.

Cardinal bowler Heramb Kanukale bagged four wickets to restrict his opponents to a meagre 74 runs. He then top scored with 12 runs for his team, playing his part in a tricky low-scoring chase. Yuvraj Gupta was the other batsman to reach double figures as Cardinal reached the target in 23.4 overs after losing eight wickets. Kanukale’s destructive bowling at Youth’s Own Union pitch and useful contribution with the bat won him 'Player of the Match' award.

Shreyansh Hirlekar of Swami Vivekanand International School, Kandivali lit up the Sunder C.C. pitch at Cross Maidan with a classy ton. The batsman scored 128 runs to star in his school’s massive 183-run win over NG Vartak High School, Virar.

Riding on ‘Player of the Match’ Hirlekar’s impressive hundred, Swami Vivekanand made 291/3 in 33 overs. Pranav Sawant (67) supported him well with a half-century. Chasing an improbable total, the Vartak boys were never in the chase and played defensively, managing just 108/8 in 33 overs.

In another match at the National Cricket Club, St. Mary High School, Mazgaon registered an easy ten-wicket win over B.A.K. Swadhyay Bhavan, Matunga. Batting first, Swadhyay Bhavan batsmen managed just 30/7 in 10 overs. ‘Player of the Match’ Charles Menezes took three wickets to break the backbone of the Swadhyay Bhavan batting line-up.

St. Mary’s openers Prathamesh Asavle and Omar Aston made sure their team reached the winning target in 6.2 overs with unbeaten knocks of 20 and 12 respectively.

At the MB Union pitch, Vedant Mayekar of Modern English High School, Chembur took five wickets to bundle out St. Paul's High School, Dadar for 24 runs in 10.1 overs. Mayekar then scored an unbeaten eleven to star in a nine-wicket win and pick the ‘Player of the Match’ title.
